WICOR stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading—five key strategies used in AVID to support student learning and prepare them for college and careers. Each element helps students build essential skills they’ll use in high school and beyond:
Writing -- Students use writing to think critically, reflect on their learning, and communicate effectively. From quickwrites to argumentative essays, writing is embedded across subjects to deepen understanding.
Inquiry -- AVID students learn to ask thoughtful questions, explore ideas, and engage in academic discussions. Strategies like Socratic Seminars and Philosophical Chairs help them become critical thinkers and active learners.
Collaboration -- Working together is a core part of AVID. Through group activities and peer learning, students build communication skills, confidence, and the ability to solve problems with others.
Organization -- AVID teaches students how to stay organized using tools like binders, planners, and goal-setting strategies. These habits help them manage their time and responsibilities—key to high school success and life after graduation.
Reading -- Students develop strong reading habits by learning how to analyze and interact with complex texts. AVID reading strategies support comprehension, critical thinking, and academic success across all subject areas.
Together, WICOR strategies empower students to take ownership of their learning, strengthen their academic skills, and build a strong foundation for the future.
