Thank you so much for everyone who sent in a donation of oranges or gummy bears for our social studies activities this week.

We used the oranges to learn the challenge mapmakers face when turning a spherical globe into a rectangular map. We learned that it's impossible to make a sphere into a rectangle without distortions (you can see students trying to turn their oranges into squares in the photos on the right). This is why maps may look different from each other, and it reminds us to analyze what we see.

We used the gummy bears to visually model the different types of world governments. Students did an awesome job and there were some really creative displays! You can see some examples in the photo gallery to the right.
