 Study Groups Can Help Teens Do Better in School

Study groups are a great way for teens to tackle difficult subjects. Dividing a subject up and learning from others can make the job easier. Study groups also teach students important skills about working together that will be useful throughout their lives.

Guide your teen through this process for setting up an effective study group:

1. Write out the group's goals. For example, "We will work together to study history. We'll edit one another's essays and help one another study for tests."

2. Think about people who might want to join the group. These should be people who take studying and doing well in school seriously. They should be people your teen knows and likes. But if your student likes to socialize too much, it's better that group members not be close buddies.

3. Bring the group together. Your teen might offer your home as a place for a first meeting. Or, students might gather in the school library or meet online.

4. Work out an agenda. In the case of a history study group, part of each meeting might include time for everyone to read the assignment. Then, the group could discuss the study questions at the end of the chapter. If a test is coming up, group members might want to prepare a list of questions they think will be on the test—along with the correct answers to those questions. Then everyone in the group could review those questions.

5. Share the responsibility. A study group needs a leader to keep everyone on task. But it's helpful if each group member takes a turn as the leader. The person who is the leader will have the responsibility for contacting other members to let them know when and where the group will meet next.

6. Remember why the group is meeting. A study group meeting is not a time to socialize (although group members may want to relax and chat after they have studied). Members need to remember that the purpose of the group is to help everyone succeed.

Grupos de Estudio pueden ayudar Adolescentes Mejorar en la Escuela.

Grupos de estudio son una excelente manera para que los adolescentes aborden materias difíciles. Dividir una materia y aprender de los demás puede facilitar el aprendizaje. Grupos de estudio también les enseñan habilidades importantes para trabajar en equipo, que les serán útiles durante toda su vida.

Guía a tu adolescente en este proceso para crear un grupo de estudio eficaz:

1. Escriban los objetivos del grupo. Por ejemplo: "Estudiaremos historia juntos. Revisaremos los ensayos de los demás y nos ayudaremos a estudiar para los exámenes".

2. Piensa en las personas que podrían querer unirse al grupo. Deben ser personas que tomen en serio el estudio y el buen rendimiento escolar. Deben ser personas que tu adolescente conozca y aprecie. Pero si a tu estudiante le gusta socializar demasiado, es mejor que los miembros del grupo no sean amigos íntimos.

3. Reúne al grupo. Tu hijo adolescente podría ofrecer tu casa para la primera reunión. También pueden reunirse en la biblioteca de la escuela o en línea.

4. Elaboren una agenda. En el caso de un grupo de estudio de historia, cada reunión podría incluir tiempo para que todos lean la lectura asignada. Luego, el grupo podría discutir las preguntas de estudio al final del capítulo. Si se acerca un examen, los miembros del grupo podrían preparar una lista de preguntas que creen que aparecerán, junto con las respuestas correctas. Después, todos en el grupo podrían repasar esas preguntas.

5. Reparte la responsabilidad. Un grupo de estudio necesita un líder para que todos se mantengan enfocados. Sin embargo, es útil que cada miembro del grupo se turne para ser líder. La persona que lidere será responsable de contactar a los demás miembros para informarles cuándo y dónde se reunirán próximamente.

6. Recuerda el motivo de la reunión. Una reunión de estudio no es un momento para socializar (aunque los miembros quizás quieran relajarse y charlar después de estudiar). Los miembros deben recordar que el propósito del grupo es ayudar a que todos sean exitosos.
