Hale Centre Theatre - Arizona is looking for a talented costume designer to join our crew beginning in June 2024. In this role, you will be required to meet with the producers and directors, analyze and interpret the script, research time periods and character histories, and coordinate the process of costume design from conception to creation.
To be a successful costume designer, you should be highly versatile and able to work under pressure. A skilled costume designer should be able to accurately interpret the director's vision and be able to create costumes in a variety of styles. Our process begins with pulling pieces from inventory, finding rentals when possible, and then building any necessary costumes.
About Hale Theatre: We are a 350 seat performing arts theater in the round. Located in Downtown Gilbert since 2003 directly across from the historic water tower. We produce Broadway plays and musicals year round, and are known for our high quality performances and theater experience as well as our friendly staff.
Costume Designer Responsibilities: Job Duties/Expectations include (but are not limited to):
Unconventional hours may be required.
Reading script and creating a costume plot.
Meeting with producers and directors to ideate and define wardrobe requirements.
Is comfortable working in a variety of genres, time periods, and design styles, character profiles, materials, and translation styles.
Preparing initial sketches, costume research, and wardrobe concepts for presentation.
Presenting final costume designs, costume plots, and samples for feedback.
Implementing modifications to the wardrobe for final approval.
Coordinating the design, first pulling from stock (selecting clothing from a wide range of time periods and styles), rental, and build of garments.
Participating in wardrobe fittings and production dress rehearsals.
Performing fittings, adjustments, and final touches on set.
Collaborates with the Costume Shop manager on all assignments: the project timelines, fitting schedules, and budgets.
Sourcing all costumes, accessories, materials needed to complete the design.
Works with the costume Shop Manager and Stage Manager to complete necessary paperwork. (Piece list, quick change tracking, etc.)
Costume Designer Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in costume design, fashion design, or similar working experience preferred.
Strong portfolio of previous work. Should include:
Designs in a range of styles and time periods.
Designs suited for various demographics and body types.
A range of costume sketches, technical drawings (e.g., detailing material, movement), articulation.
Finished drawings and paintings of costumes.
Examples of actual fabricated costumes are a bonus.
A minimum of 3-5 years experience as a professional costume designer.
Strong research and interpretation skills
Good knowledge of design principles, techniques, and translation styles.
Detailed knowledge of materials and textiles.
The ability to design and sew patterns for a variety of garments.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
The ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
Strong attention to detail and collaboration skills.
Job Type: Contract for 2024-2025 Season with potential for permanent spot
