Hale Centre Theatre - Arizona is seeking a Technical Director to join the production team producing work for our main stages, Monday/ Tuesday productions and concert hall programs.

The Hale Centre Theatre - Arizona is a recognizable theater in the Arizona market producing award-winning shows since 2003. Hale Theatre produces eleven mainstage productions each year and up to sixteen concert productions. Hale Theatre is a family operated non-equity house that produces professional level productions.
Summary:
Broadly responsible to ensure each production and performance runs smoothly from first technical planning meetings through rehearsals and last curtain
Is the department head of the scenic department and oversees the day-to-day operation of the scenic shop, ensuring that set pieces are built to design specifications, on-time and on budget
The Technical Director supervises the scene shop departments, as well as full-time and part-time carpenters in the planning and execution of all aspects of scenery for HCT productions. They ensure the successful interpretation, engineering, and realization of all scenic designs while balancing budget, time and labor requirements, and maintaining a safe working environment.
Responsible for all Technical production elements.
Works with technical department heads to troubleshoot and problem solve any issues that affect safety, show quality, consistency etc.
Oversees the completion of technical & scenic build projects and ensures that all technical needs are met and delivered on schedule and within budget.
Work with department heads to ensure show specific technical training is developed, implemented and completed.
Liaison between Scenic Shop and technical departments in theater.
Responsible for all production maintenance
Production responsibilities:
Core Duties
Turns designer’s visual renderings into construction drawings to be used by carpenters
Builds sets and welds as necessary
Designs rigging and special effects
Supervises carpenters
Oversees the prop and painting department
Oversees changeovers and Load-ins
Attends productions meetings
Maintains a safe work environment
Oversees maintenance of shop equipment and work truck
Oversees cleanup and organization of set storage
Oversees theater repairs on nightly reports
Installs special effects on Load-ins/ Stage Technicians
Attends rehearsals and techs as necessary
Assists in hang/ focus and lighting needs for Lighting Designers
Trains running crews in moving scenery/ rigging/ effects
Responsible for repairs and maintenance of lighting and sound equipment
Manages and trains Stage Technicians
Oversees stage supplies and inventories and special effects
Keeps tech room organized
Knowledge/Experience in these areas are a plus:
Oversees all technical areas of theater
Experience managing sound and lighting equipment
Lighting design
Stage manager and sound engineer experience
Knowledge of drafting or AutoCAD
The ideal candidate has:
3 Years or more of Professional Technical Director experience
Strong knowledge of Scenic Construction for Theatre

Designer Support and Collaboration:
Communicate with Designers to support and execute designs with a high artistic standard within resources of time, labor, materials, and budget
Ensure design changes are communicated to production team
Communicate with Stage Manager and Designer on rehearsal and tech notes
Communication:
Maintains clear and consistent communication with other production departments
Distributes technical ground plans and sections
Provides samples and photos as needed to designers and directors
Basic Qualifications:
Strong Knowledge of engineering fundamentals and experience with their application to non-theoretical problems
Hands-on experience with the scenic automation
Solid experience with safe, industry-standard rigging practices and hands-on experience building rigging systems
Advanced knowledge of theatrical construction techniques, including carpentry, welding, rigging, and metalworking
The ability to create technical drawings, implement scenery fabrication
The ability to communicate with kindness and clarity, fostering teamwork and a collaborative environment
Conflict resolution skills - diffusing tension, navigating difficult conversations, mediating resolutions
Ability to adapt and quickly communicate changes
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
Experience managing a theatrical shop floor environment.
Comfortable driving a 26' truck or trailer
Must be able to lift 50 or more pounds
Work Schedule:
Shop Hours M-F 9am-6pm; attend tech and preview performances, attend producer run throughs. Some evenings, weekends and holidays will be required.
Flexibility in scheduling will be required to accommodate evening and weekend rehearsals, productions, and performances, based on production needs throughout the year
