Project 9 - Backstage Crew

Backstage Crew is for those keen on sound, lighting, set design, costumes, makeup, anything to do with backstage. If you are not sure what might be right for you, have a look at this list and what they do. This front page is the project for all aspects, then you can do the specific one for your area.

You will be supporting other projects and being part of their performances. This could include Stage Challenge, Shakespeare Festival, Musical Production or being sound and lighting or tech support for bands and solo artists.

Learning outcomes for this project:

• Be tech crew for a performance (Evidence for Collaborative, Compassionate, Contributor, Designer, Fa’aaloalo, Resilient, NCEA Performing Arts, English)
• Demonstrate and apply knowledge in a backstage context (Evidence for Contributor, Fa'aaloalo, Rangatiratanga, Resilient, NCEA Performing Arts, English, History)

• What area or areas would you like to work in? Do you have experience or is this new to you? Do you have a passion for one particular area? What would be your plan for this? Do you have people to work with? What questions do you have?
• What performances would you like to be a part of? Have a look at the other projects and see which ones might interest you. What would you like to do for these? You can either take responsibility for an area, or be part of a team, up to you.
• Complete this spreadsheet with your plans.

• What do you want to learn about? What do you need to know? Where are you going to find the information?
• Choose an area of interest and complete the background worksheet on your area of interest - Read an article online about your area. See the Resources page for links to articles, or find your own. Complete the question sheet about this article.
• What skills are needed in this area? What do you still need to learn?
• Identify and describe the tasks, responsibilities and relationships of your production area in relation to: - the production team, - lines of responsibility, - the production process and timeline, - the text.

• Choose your performance you will be supporting and do some research into previous performances that are similar. Explain what they do. What do you think of these? How would you do things differently?
• What are the Health and Safety requirements in your area? There are lots of links in the Resources page to help you. Go to Google Classroom (code ad14yx) and complete the kete on the Health and Safety Act.
• What is needed for our performance? Start to write your design plan for your specific area. You will need to see each individual page for more information on how to do this.

• What do you still need to know? What are some other options?
• Show your design to others and get their feedback - what do they think?
• From feedback, improve your design (Resilient)
