Whakaoriori Kāhui Ako- Collaboratively building potential across Whakaoriori.
Late in 2024, we were fortunate to have Dee Cruse present a visual pūrakau at a Wairarapatanga Kāhui day. Her kōrero was a great lead into our goal for 2025 which has been: “to increase kaiako and ākonga knowledge of local pūrākau, by creating kete for kura from ECE through Secondary to use.” So, this year we have focussed our mahi around creating two kete of resources to support the pūrakau of Haunui-a-Nanaia and Nukupewapewa and his legacy of peace.
We wanted our pūrākau resources to be easily accessible, so that any kaiako from ECE through to Primary and Secondary could pick up and use the kete straight away.
We settled on three poutama for each learning area as opposed to restricting activities as ECE, Primary and Secondary. This allowed for the flexibility we wanted for the resource, so kaiako are able to select which poutama activity they would like to use, and adapt it for their kura/setting. This allows for teacher creativity and student extension within each learning task. Each learning area of the curriculum is used to help explore the pūrākau on a deeper level, as well as make connections to our whenua.
The first kete is the story of Haunui-ā-Nanaia, and includes activities such as EOTC trips, waiata, coding, whanowhano, and mapping activities.
The second is the pūrākau of Nukupewapewa. This kete has activities such as poi, investigating waves, symmetry and symbolism.
Kaiako are able to use the activities to explore the pūrākau with their class, to gain and build an understanding of each story and how it is important for our area.
