The Pigeon Needs a Bath - Sink or Float Experiment
Make a List, SORT, and COUNT!
Before activity: Talk about the words FLOAT and SINK with your child.
If you have paper or cardboard, encourage your child to write the word sink (OR an “S”) on one side and the word float (OR an “F”) on the other side. It is okay for your child to scribble or write letter-like forms, if he or she is unable to write letters yet.
Materials-
A container for water (pot, bucket, dishpan, etc)
Several objects that can get wet like toys, sticks, rocks,coins, utensils, etc)
Optional- add food coloring to water for additional sensory experience
Directions
Adult fills the container with water.
Child chooses object and predicts if it will sink or float
Child places object in container
Observe and discuss which objects SINK and which ones FLOAT
Sort items
Count: How many objects FLOAT? How many SINK?
Did MORE objects sink or float?
Can you write the total number for each?
Can you write the names of the objects that floated and sank?
