Students should arrive in DP1 already able to sketch, and are strongly advised to complete these two courses online over the summer in preparation for the Design Technology DP course.
This course by Dr. Barbara Oakley, Professor of Engineering, is available on Coursera for free.
It gives you easy access to the invaluable learning techniques used by experts in all fields. It teaches learning techniques, so the time you spend studying is more effective. For example the course covers:
- The Pomodoro Technique
- The two main brain learning modes
- What are “chunks”
- What is the illusion of learning
- Different types of memory techniques (and much more).
Students should install Shapr3D on a tablet or laptop and complete the tutorials to ensure they can work efficiently at the start of DP1. The software we use is Shapr3D which is free for our students if they sign up with their school email. A tutorial on how to download, install and create an account can be found here. CAD tutorials can be found here.
Students should also have an active interest in the subject, really fall in love with the process of making. One way to do this is to watch documentaries. There are many of them available, but the Netflix series, Abstract, is an excellent place to start. Here is a selection of the of them.
