Science is a core subject at Years 7-9. Students engage in learning of scientific concepts, processes, inquiry and develop skills in scientific literacy and laboratory work. Students in years 7-9 study Science for 3 periods per week (Years 7 and 9) or 4 periods a week (Year 8). Students have access to scientific laboratory equipment to enhance their learning and developing of laboratory skills and safety.
GWSC is fortunate to have an expert team of laboratory technicians who support the practical work of Science learning. Students have access to all standard laboratory equipment as well as microscopes, spectroscopes and other pieces of laboratory analysis tools.
Each year, students will learn about various topics from each of the disciplines of Science including Biology, Earth Sciences, Psychology, Physics and Chemistry. The Science curriculum at GWSC is committed to delivering the outcomes of the Victorian Curriculum.
From 2026, the Victorian Curriculum for Science 2.0 will be implemented at GWSC. To find out more about the VC 2.0 please click here.
In Year 9, students are offered three semester-based Science electives: Research Science and Psychology. If chosen, these are completed alongside the core subject. All 3 subjects are 3 period-a-week electives.
GWSC is using the Pearson Science Text Books for core Science and Student Activity Books. Electronic versions of these books are available. Students can also access different non-fiction text resources to support in Science learning from the GWSC Library.
The electives do not have prescribed texts.
From 2026, due to the new implementation of the VC 2.0, we will no longer be using the Pearson text books. More information will be published through our booklist in Seme ster 2 of 2025.
