AVID Elective

Welcome to AVID Elective!

About the Class:

In 7th grade, AVID students work towards their goal of being college and career ready. To help students accomplish this goal, AVID has developed the AVID Elective course. For one period a day, students receive the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses. Each day, students will be engaged in work that will help them succeed in their content classes and prepare them for higher levels of education and the workforce.

To do this, AVID elective helps students build their understanding of the following concepts:

The AVID curriculum features activities that will build personal and relational skills for students. The AVID curriculum may feature guest speakers, field trips, research projects, career exploration and more. Tutorials will occur on Thursdays. One of the pillars of the AVID program is the tutorial groups where students are supported in their rigorous coursework through the help of tutors. Tutorials allow students to work with their peers to ask questions about concepts they are struggling with in their core classes. During AVID elective, students will also spend at least 1 hour a week reading a book in which they will summarize on Fridays.

Supplies:

AVID students are required to keep a binder or notebook that separates their core classes from each other. Binders will be checked weekly for organization. Students will have to present a binder each Friday that is organized by class. The binder must be free of loose paper and organized based on the guidelines set in the binder check rubric.

Students will need:

Binder check rubrics will be provided during the 1st week of school. The first binder check will be July 28th.
