Freshman English is designed to give students a foundation in basic English skills. It will include units on the novel, short story, speech, drama and poetry. Writing will include narration/personal, description, persuasion and creative expression. The language workshop will concentrate on editing skills, word choice, clarity, sentence building, sentence skills, coherence and style. Other skills that will be emphasized are vocabulary, speaking and listening, following directions, thinking skills and study skills.

This is a course designed for freshmen with advanced reading and writing skills. Extensive readings in the major literature genres will serve as a springboard to writings that demonstrate an in-depth understanding of these works of literature. Junior English is designed to provide students with a foundation in basic English skills needed for college or the workplace after high school. Reading units will include drama, poetry, and the novel. Writing units will focus on personal, narrative, professional, literary analysis, and argumentative writing. Junior English is an intensive writing and language program integrated with the study of American literature. Skill emphasis is on vocabulary, speaking and listening, following directions, thinking skills, and study skills.

Senior English focuses on exploring both traditional and modern literature. It also involves creative, narrative, argumentative, and informative writing. Students will explore the ties between how science fiction and mythologies play a role in modern storytelling and popular culture.

**Kirkwood Community College Composition I is a dual credit course. Students who pass the course will receive 3.0 college credit hours and Benton Community credit. The college credit is transferable to many other colleges.

Creative Writing is a course designed to help students gain skills in expressing themselves with originality, creativity, and clarity in stories, poetry, and personal essays. Students will have the opportunity to experience being part of a writing community and learn to give and receive useful feedback to grow as writers.

Students will study the fundamentals of journalism and produce yearbooks for the high school and middle school. Skills acquired will include editing, improving critical reading and thinking, using Yearbook Avenue and Canva, meeting deadlines, effective time management, marketing, and creative and effective writing. Additionally, students will learn to operate a 35mm digital camera, compose, edit, and crop photos. Students will photograph a variety of subjects, from sporting events to candid photos suitable for yearbook layouts.

This one-quarter course is designed for students interested in exploring mostly modern literature based on challenging contemporary issues, themes, and artists. Fiction, non-fiction, plays, film, and poetry (including contemporary music lyrics) will be studied in-depth. Students will analyze, discuss, and find understanding of the challenging issues of our time. Thematic units may include: responsibility, choices and consequences, prejudice, crime, teen-adult relationships, etc.

The focus of Film Studies is to develop literacy skills by engaging in the study of films. Students will use critical thinking skills to evaluate and compare films as well as develop writing skills and digital media production skills. This course will involve active viewing of film, reading of informational texts, development of writing and reasoning skills in a variety of areas (from basic summary to analysis to critiquing). In addition, study of many literary concepts will occur as they are crucial to film (including but not limited to character, mood, motivation, symbol, allegory, characterization, nonlinear plot, framing sequence, point of view, etc.).

This course is designed for students to gain experience in a variety of performance and speaking activities. Students will engage in learning about the theater and will read and perform plays and scripts. Students will perform in a variety of dramatic acting activities. Students will analyze and evaluate public speaking strategies and techniques. Students will engage in debates and a variety of public speaking activities for a variety of purposes and audiences.
