The Business and Technology Department prepares students with the knowledge and skills needed for success in today’s rapidly changing world. The goal is to equip students with problem-solving, critical thinking, and technical skills that will serve them in higher education, the workforce, and beyond.
Students at Benton Community School District gain experience in areas such as computer science, entrepreneurship, personal finance, accounting, marketing and business law.
Benton also offers an extracurricular club called DECA that provides leadership, networking, and hands-on business experiences through competitions and conferences.

Digital Media is a hands-on, project-based course that introduces students to the creative and technical skills used in today’s digital content industries. Students will explore graphic design, photography, video production, audio editing, animation, and emerging media tools while developing an understanding of visual communication and storytelling.
Throughout the course, students will learn to plan, create, and refine digital projects using industry-standard software. Emphasis is placed on creativity, responsible digital citizenship, collaboration, and real-world application. Projects may include logo and brand design, photo editing, short films, podcasts, motion graphics, social media content, and more.

In this entry level computer science course, students will learn to program apps using a graphical, block based programming language. After learning fundamentals of programming, student’s may transition to text based programming like the Python language. Students will use a variety of tools and computational thinking concepts as they build confidence and gain experience in the field of computer science.

Computer and Workplace Skills is a practical class that helps students build skills they will use in school, jobs, and everyday life. Students learn how to use common computer tools like documents, spreadsheets, presentations, email, and online collaboration tools. The class also focuses on important workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, responsibility, and professionalism. Through hands-on projects and real-life activities, students learn how to work effectively with others, stay organized, and be prepared for future careers.

Overall this course provides a foundational understanding for making informed personal financial decisions leading to financial independence. Real world topics covered will included career exploration and related after high school training/ college costs needed to achieve career goals; creating useful/meaningful spending plans to help guide financial decision making; gross/net income based on career interests; insurance; credit cards; savings/investing/checking accounts.

Cybersecurity introduces the tools and concepts of cybersecurity and encourages students to create solutions that allow people to share computing resources while protecting privacy. Nationally, computational resources are vulnerable and frequently attacked; in Cybersecurity, students use virtual labs to discover key concepts of the field. These labs progress from an individual computer to more and more complex network environments. This course raises students’ knowledge of and commitment to ethical computing behavior. It also aims to develop students’ skills as consumers, friends, citizens, and employees who can effectively contribute to communities with a dependable cyber-infrastructure that moves and processes information

Students will cover accounting procedures for a sole proprietorship and a merchandising corporation. Students will complete assignments using both manual accounting methods and computerized accounting methods using Excel spreadsheets and Peachtree accounting software. Students will also complete real world business simulations using automated accounting software.

This course is a continuation of Accounting I. Students will continue covering accounting procedures for a merchandising corporation using both manual and computerized accounting procedures. A focus on entrepreneurship and what it takes to succeed in the business world will be the basis for a personal business project completed throughout the term. Areas covered in this class will include marketing, finance (personal and business), sales, management, personnel issues, and decision-making plans that are important to any business.

This course is designed for students interested in learning more about the law and how it relates to businesses and to them personally. Class sessions are designed as interactive and discussion-oriented. Actual law cases are used periodically throughout the class to demonstrate student comprehension and utilization of law processes and procedures. Areas of study include crimes, law enforcement, torts, contract disputes, lease agreements, and laws relating to minors.
