Which procedures and routines have worked well in your classroom? What resources did you use to design and implement these procedures and routines? Which procedures and routines did you accidentally leave out - how did you realize your classroom needed them?
Reflection:
Procedures in a high school classroom are never perfect, or at least not for me. Since day 1 the kids have been expected to come into class, grab a calculator and sit down in their assigned seat. Assigned seats have worked out extremely well, no students seem to ever argue with me about it. I would also say the majority of them have began to grab their calculator and one for their partner as well before sitting down. This helps us get started immediately after the bell rings. Another routine the students do well with is clearing off their desk (including cell phones) for a quiz or test. They also do not talk during testing time in respect of others. Modeling all of these routines has been what has helped the most. This allows the kids to fully understand what they should look like and sound like.
The main routine I left out is modeling how to put your phone completely away while the teacher or a student is talking or when working in groups. The second I put students into groups to work together there is always one student in the group that spends the majority of the time on their phone. This makes it extremely hard to collaborate as a group.
