Trauma - Is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel a full range of emotions and experiences.
Traumatic experiences can make it difficult for children to access their prefrontal cortex, the portion of the brain that governs emotional regulation and executive functioning (cognition and behavior).
An adverse childhood experience (ACE) is trauma that takes place in a child’s life before age 17.
Examples include:
• Physical, emotional, sexual abuse
• Alcohol and/or drug abuse in the household
• An incarcerated household member
• Someone in the household who is/was depressed, mentally ill, institutionalized or suicidal
• Mother treated violently
• One or no parent/Divorce
• Emotional or physical neglect
