About Ms. Kim

Dear 5th graders,

My name is Ms. Kim, and I will be one of your teachers  this year. I am so excited to meet you all and start our adventure together!

I came to the United States when I was 1 from South Korea and grew up in Arcadia, CA. I’ve lived most all my life in California except for 1 year in Washington. Although Washington does get a lot of rain, it sure pays off because it is the most beautiful state I have lived in. You are constantly surrounded by tall and lush trees and city forests in your vicinity.

For school, I attended Cal State Northridge for my undergraduate, Cal State LA for my Master’s Degree in Education, and like Ms. Yniguez, a supplemental math certificate from University of Riverside.  A funny fact is that we completed the program together.

Some of my favorite activities are working out, going on walks, finding new places to hike or go for a trail run. Currently I’m training for a 50K ultramarathon that will be held in December and a marathon that  will be held in June. Moving and sports have always been something I’ve really enjoyed.  WIth movement, you need fuel so I also like to find new restaurants around Los Angeles.  We are so blessed to have so many options.  I would say my favorite is sushi or Japanese (cooked food).

This year will be my 22nd year as a classroom teacher, and I have taught 1st, 5th,and 6th. This will be my 11th year at Monte Vista.  I’ve also subbed in high schools and even taught summer school math to high schoolers.  My favorite subject to teach is math as I have become more familiar with the different strategies students can use from kindergarten to 6th grade. It’s interesting to see how students think and solve problems and I enjoy supporting them.  5th grade is a fun and exciting age where you start to become more independent and curious, and you are eager to learn new things.

I am passionate about creating a positive and supportive learning environment where you feel safe and respected. I believe that everyone learns differently, and I am committed to providing you with the individualized attention you need to succeed.

I am looking forward to getting to know each of you and helping you grow and learn this year. I know it will be a great year!

Sincerely,

Ms. Kim
