On this page is a selection of work to demonstrate the learning that takes place in French lessons across the school. We have included a variety of work, alongside photos of the children learning and participating in class to show the wide range of activities and enrichment events in which they take part.
Every year on 26th September, we celebrate the European Day of Languages. EYFS have the opportunity to listen to and learn French song: Bonjour. They will also learn some Greetings and will have access to a few different activities. These children painted the French flag using the red and blue paint from the Art table, which then then attached to an art straw.
In Key Stage 1, the children take part in the European Day of Languages, where we celebrate languages spoken in our school. KS1 children take part in a variety of activities, including learning some greetings, listening to a song, counting and sometimes even learning a traditional dance.
In Years 3 and 4, most of the learning is through song, speaking and listening as well as some writing of words and simple sentences which are heavily scaffolded.
Each year builds upon the previous year, and a lot of revision occurs with the addition of new learning. At the start of each lesson, the children spend a few minutes completing a sticky knowledge task based on the previous week's work. Children also learn to express their opinion using j'aime and je n'aime pas.
The image here shows year 3 practising the parts of the body by singing: Head, shoulders, knees and toes in French.
In Years 5 and 6, children continue to build on their skills. As the years progress, children still continue with speaking and listening especially of new vocabulary and sentence structures, but more is expected with regard to reading and writing. They are now at the stage when they can begin to use their knowledge of French and English to be language detectives and work out what words mean independently.
The photo here is of a group of Year 6 boys, introducing the school, as if they were going to show someone around.
