Progression in Maths

The Maths Curriculum at Gurnard has been carefully planned to develop children's knowledge and skills across year groups. Through careful mapping, we have ensured that children are given the understanding that they will need to make progression in the subject.

Using the progression map below, we have carefully scaffolded learning so that each year group starts with Number and Place Value, followed by calculation skills. These are the foundation blocks of all Maths skills and need to be embedded as these skills gives children the knowledge and confidence to work across the other areas in Maths.

A mastery approach is used throughout the school using concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches which support all children to understand the Maths being taught. This approach is broken down into 'small steps' so children understand each concept and can build upon their knowledge so the learning journey is structured .
