Summary
The Assistant Community Director (ACD) is a paraprofessional position and is an integral role in Residential Education & Housing, providing elevated leadership and support of residential students, their peers on the RA staff, the Community Directors, and the department in general. The ACD reports directly to the Community Director (CD) of their assigned area. ACDs accept this position understanding that it is a developing position and responsibilities and expectations may change.
Placement
The housing placement of the ACD is made at the discretion of the Community Director staff and Director of ResEd&Housing, and will be determined by staffing needs and where the ACD’s strengths will be best utilized. Housing arrangements could range from a single room to an apartment style arrangement. A candidate may choose to decline the ACD position and accept the position of Resident Advisor instead, but placement may change.
Duties
The responsibilities and obligations of the Assistant Community Director include those identified in the Resident Advisor Position Description and Resident Advisor Agreement Form with the following additions or substitutions:
STAFF LEADERSHIP
Provide a much greater leadership role for the RA staff.
Assist with the recruitment and hiring of Resident Advisors, Community Directors, and other positions within Student Affairs.
Assist with committee work including RA committees and departmental committees.
Assist in supporting programming of all RAs in area by attending when possible.
Lead RA Training sessions in Fall and Winter and assist with additional training sessions. Presence during the entirety RA training is required.
Assist with the training and transition of mid-year/mid-semester RA hires. .
Conduct RA staff meetings
Conduct 1-on-1s with RAs in area Biweekly
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
Be available and responsive by phone and email.
Maintain confidentiality and privacy in dealing with sensitive situations.
Maintain updated Google Calendar which is shared with CDs, Assistant Director of ResEd & Housing , and Director of ResEd & Housing with the expectation that meetings/obligations may be scheduled for you based on available times.
Have access to and authority of using master keys.
Assist with the administration and conducting of Health & Safety Inspections.
Assist with Opening and Closing responsibilities as scheduled; this may include specific return/arrival or departure times outside of the RA Agreement schedule.
Inspect rooms once vacated, reporting damages or other issues.
Arrive prior to the start of Fall RA Training for training and to prepare RA training sessions and assist CDs. (The specific date and time of arrival is subject to change. A date/time will be provided to you before the end of this school year)
o Meet weekly with fellow ACDs and Prostaff
RESIDENTIAL STUDENT SUPPORT AND PROGRAMMING
Respond to student crises and concerns as needed; conduct and report on wellness checks for student issues as needed.
Conduct student/roommate conflict mediation along with other RAs as needed.
Provide informed recommendations for room changes to the CD for final approval.
In collaboration with all Assistant CDs, plan and execute one additional large-scale social program and one individual program for area each semester
ON-CALL RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve in a crucial role of the on-call rotation. This includes carrying and responding to the "Community Director On-Call" phone during your 24 hour on-call shift. Schedules will be created to accommodate academic obligations.
OTHER/GENERAL
Refer and/or elevate student issues to proper resources/authorities/administrators as needed.
Assist CD as requested.
Execute other duties as assigned.
Compensation
$450 bonus each semester in addition to RA compensation which includes: RA Award in the amount of a single room on-campus, $250/semester in second year as RA, $350/semester in third year as RA, award for parking pass.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
At least one semester’s experience as a Resident Advisor
Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50
In good standing as a student and staff member
Clear demonstration of leadership potential, administrative abilities, and communication skills.
Enrolled full-time (exceptions for seniors during their last semester). Must live in on-campus housing assignment; time away from campus must be approved by CD 24 hours in advance with the exception of Fall, Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Breaks.
The RA position is estimated to be 12-15 hours/week. The Assistant Community Director position is estimated to be an additional 5-10 hours/week, and some weeks will be busier than others. Some nights and weekends will be required. ACDs must obtain written approval from their supervising CD for all outside/other employment.
