Frequently Asked Questions

I have an undocumented student who I think needs support, what should I do?

It is important to know that if a student has told you their documentation status, they have shared a deeply personal piece of their identity. This information is for the student to share, not you. If you think there are offices or resources that the student should access, encourage them to reach out to those offices. You should not reach out to an office for a student unless that student has give you explicit consent.

Why is there an increase of ICE presence in the community?

During the 2018 election, constituents in Wake, Durham, Mecklenburg, and Forsyth counties pushed the candidates for Sheriff to promise to end 287(g) agreements. 287(g) is an agreement between local law enforcement and ICE which allowed local officers to enforce immigration law. The newly elected Sheriffs in the previously mentioned counties ended their 287(g) agreements. In response, ICE has increased their activity in the counties. The ICE Atlanta field office Director has stated that they are now actively seeking out undocumented folks in North Carolina.

What would happen if ICE showed up on campus?

Should something happen on campus, we would not be given any advance notice. We would need to follow law enforcement directive (warrant and/or subpoena). During/after whatever happens, our Cabinet and any other key individuals would gather to determine what next steps are required - communication with the community, providing support for affected individuals, etc. This process would be similar to any other situation that affects are community. If you see any law enforcement on campus without anyone from Public Safety, please call PSafe immediately. If law enforcement is asking questions or trying to find out information about a particular student, the officers or agents should be directed to Public Safety.
