I am so blessed to get to go to a part of Italy that's off the tourist map. I feel as if this class will help me so much as a future educator because it will allow me to be an outsider in a country temporarily to gain a perspective of new students to the United States coming into school.
I went to Italy (Pompeii) when I was very young and don't remember much, so I'm excited to get to experience Italian culture as much as I can.
I believe that taking this class will help me communicate with students who do not have English as their first language.
I was voted Captain of the Volleyball team by my teammates this past year.
I'm a firm believer that experience helps with learning and teachers should be life long learners. Therefore, I think this experience will help me be the best educator I can be.
I've wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, I love working with other people and hearing about culture that is different from my own.
My favorite people... my family
"What is the fatal charm of Italy? What do we find there that can be found nowhere else? I believe it is a certain permission to be human, which other places, other countries, lost long ago." - Erica Jong, American novelist
"In Italy, they add work and life on to food and wine." – Robin Leach, English writer
I have always wanted to study abroad but felt like I had lost my chance. I am grateful to get a second chance and to participate in this authentic Italian experience.
I have been to Italy before but have only visited the touristic parts. It will be interesting to stay in a city that has not yet been overrun with tourists.
I am excited to have the chance to not only experience a new culture, but to also be immersed directly with the people and location in a teaching atmosphere.
My goal for this journey is to gain a understanding in how to better teach students that speak another language and learn as much as I can from this.

I was born in Manta, Manabí, a small touristic city in the coast of Ecuador. Then I moved to the Bronx, NY at the age of 16 years old.
Coming from two different backgrounds such as New York City and Ecuador has pushed me to learn about others' cultures and identities. On top of that, I got my college degree in North Carolina in 2018. Therefore, my teaching career has started since I was in Ecuador, and since then, it has been influenced by places with very diverse people.
"Any good teacher knows how important it is to connect with students and understand their culture." Adora Svitak
I strongly believe in the power of cultural education. Culture is the most powerful aspect that a human being can offer to others in the world and so people should be open to learn differences and being okay when feeling uncomfortable.
I will start my teaching career this upcoming summer of 2018. I am looking forward to teach in the Bronx in a Bilingual School.
Teaching in the immigrant and refugee community has been my passion.
I have had the opportunity to volunteer in different parts of the world. Most of my community service has taken place in different educational settings either as a tutor or as an English teacher. Some of these places are New York, North Carolina, and especially, Ecuador.
Being able to teach in a different country and culture within southern Italy, will allow me to enhance my ELA teaching skills in the classroom. Thus, I am looking forward to have the most positive attitude in this experience and give my best in this blog. Hope you all enjoy it!

For as long as I can remember my dream has been to have my own preschool. I've always loved to work with children and have worked with them at every opportunity I've had. I have worked at summer camps, babysit, done internships and observations, gone abroad to teach, and more.
My other big passions are travel, and photography. If I could, I would run my own preschool during the school year and during the summer I would travel all over the world taking pictures.
At school my favorite things to do are play ultimate frisbee and be outside in the woods. I am currently the treasurer of my frisbee team and next year I'm going to be a captain.

I am was born and raised in Syracuse, NY, which is in Central New York (not the city).
The idea of combining the outdoors, education, and adventure is are three things that I wish to incorporate into my career. Educating individuals about the importance of education while being outdoors help teach individuals on important life skills outside the traditional classroom.
I have studied abroad previously in Siena at the Scuola Leonardo da Vinci
I love visiting and experiencing different cultures as I find it incredibly interesting learning about how many different cultures are out there
I love almost all sports including baseball, rugby, basketball, soccer, etc.
I played baseball for over 15 years and recently picked up rugby in college
Hobbies: hiking, climbing, traveling, watching & playing sports, being outside, going on adventures, brewing beer.

I have known for as long as I can remember that I am going to be a teacher.
I am passionate about all the sciences, especially biology and psychology.
In my free time, I love to read and make cat collars to donate to local shelters
I have studied abroad once before in the town of El Roble (in El Salvador). I had a fantastic time getting to know people from a culture different than my own, and I am excited to have that opportunity again.

I am so excited to spend three weeks in Italy! I have never been to Europe and I know this is going to be a once in a lifetime experience. I can't wait to eat all the amazing food, take in the culture, and help students learn more English!
Join me on my journey here!
Associate Professor of Education Studies and WGSS at Guilford College
I hold a Ph.D in Curriculum and Teaching with a Specialization in Cultural Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2001).
I speak English and Italian.
One the best parts of being a professor is getting to share my work at conferences. Most recently I presented with three generations of scholars from my graduate program in cultural studies. At AESA 2017, Pittsburgh, PA.
I started traveling at forty and got to know Italy the way most people do: as a tourist. I enjoyed visiting alone, but I love being an Italian family member, and now a study abroad leader!
Couldn't believe I was in Rome, 2010.
My second trip combined two of my favorite things: writing and horseback riding. I was a trainer for nearly twenty years and still believe that getting out on a horse helps with everything academic.
Riding in Montieri, 2010. "A man on a horse is spiritually, as well as physically, bigger than a man on foot." - John Steinbeck.
"Good Wine, Good Food, Good Friends, Good Times:" In Assissi for a two-week writing workshop with author Dorothy Allison, 2010.
It wasn't until I moved to Italy for a year that I began learning about the tremendous differences between North and South. Fabio was my cultural broker; he still is.
The idea for doing a study abroad was born when Fabio first took me to Bernalda. It didn't take long for my academic self to start wanting to share. I can't count how many times I said, "I want to bring students here!" I'm pretty excited about making that wish a reality this summer.
At the Greek ruins in Metaponto, 2013.
There's no better way to learn cultural humility than by experiencing yourself in a new place. As Confucius said, "remember that no matter where you go, there you are."
I hope everyone on the trip will embrace the words of Paolo Freire: “Whoever teaches learns in the act of teaching, and whoever learns teaches in the act of learning.” My students are my greatest teachers. Yours will be, too. (Pietrapertossa, 2017.)
