The best way to come back feeling prepared for math class is to practice your math facts over the summer.

Reflex Math

Repeated, ongoing practice of facts increases retention. When students know their facts like they “know their name”, cognitive space is freed up in the brain as they begin to work on more complex, multi-step problems (Boaler, 2015). Daily practice of facts is an integral part of mathematical learning. Reflex Math, is a research-based online resource, available to students in grades 2-5. It is a smart program which means it knows which facts the student knows and which they are still working on so it can target specific facts for each individual student! If you're not sure how long your child should be on reflex or how to know if they are using their time effectively, just make sure they get their "green light" (it is in the upper right corner of the screen). When focused, getting their green light should only take about 15 minutes. Doing this just a few times a week will drastically improve a student's fact fluency which will increase their confidence and allow them to concentrate on the bigger picture within math word problems and algebraic expressions.
