The Ace Mentor Program of the Capital Region and Hudson Valley

About Us

Founded in 2001, the ACE Mentor Program of Upstate New York helps high school students from the Albany and Hudson Valley area to better understand the significant benefits and positive rewards available through careers in architecture, construction and engineering.

Every other week from November through May, experienced professionals from local building industry firms mentor student teams as they pursue projects similar to those the mentors themselves work on every day.

Students also visit professional offices, tour construction sites, and take other informative and exciting field trips. In addition, program participants who decide to pursue a career in the building industry are eligible for both national and local scholarships.

Over the past six years, we’ve awarded over $30,000 in scholarships to students attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Vassar, Carnegie-Mellon, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Hudson Valley Community College and other post-high school academic programs.

Our Team Projects

The Albany team works on real construction projects that are currently under way, including a shopping mall expansion and a technology high school renovation.

Each year, the team works on projects that are real construction projects. Using actual project objectives and plans, subgroups of each team created their own design solutions by adding features, revising spatial arrangements and developing other innovations. In addition, students visited the projects’ jobsites at different times to observe construction progress, toured professional offices and attended a construction careers day. Sponsored by the local building industry, this event gave students an opportunity to find out more about building trades, such as carpentry and bricklaying, as well as the operation of heavy construction equipment.

While working on their projects, students learned to read building plans and blueprints. They also became familiar with both standard and three-dimensional computer-aided design technology. And they created estimates by using mentor-provided cost lists and their own measurements, as well as by integrating computer-aided design applications with estimating software.

The program year concluded with each team’s subgroups presenting their work before an audience of parents, peers and mentors. In addition, we awarded local and national scholarships ranging in value from $250 to $1,500.

Schenectady ARC - College for Me

We would like to introduce a program that Schenectady ARC offers to high school graduates interested in a career in the health care/human service field.  Experience as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) is a great springboard for a wide range of career avenues.

Schenectady ARC has developed; in partnership with NYS Department of Labor and SUNY Schenectady; a program called College for Me.  In a nutshell, the College for Me program allows people to work full time as a DSP Apprentice with Schenectady ARC and attend SUNY Schenectady in the DSP certificate program.  Up to $5,000 of the tuition cost is free to the student.  For most people, this allows them to complete the equivalent of 1 year of college for free.  Unlike many other certificate programs, all courses are true college credit and can be applied towards many AAS and BA/BS degrees.   A summary of the program’s curriculum and a flyer about the program are attached.  Minimum requirements to apply to the program are a high school diploma, and a valid NYS drivers’ license is preferred.

This could be a great opportunity for some upcoming 2023 graduates who plan to stay local as you begin college or who are unsure of how you can afford college tuition.  We would love to be part of your future.

Schenectady College and Career Outreach Center (SCCOC)

Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital

Make a difference... Become a Sunnyview Hospital Junior Volunteer!

We have both adult and junior volunteer programs offering many exciting and rewarding choices to the volunteer.  A volunteer can choose to work directly with patients and professional staff; transporting patients, or work in a  position which does not involve direct patient contact, such as our gift shop, admitting department or answering the telephone at the front desk.

One of the programs we are seeking volunteers to work in is our Patient Request Service Department.  These volunteers deliver mail and flowers to our patients, as well as visit with them, assist them with writing letters, and some even shop for our patients.  We urgently need peiple to fill this position as soon as possible., and are more than glad to speak to any individual or group wishing to participate in this program.  The Patient Request Program operates seven days per week, offering the volunteer a choice of days to participate.  We also need helpers in the Central Supply area whereby volunteers deliver supplies to the patient.  And as always, we need help with our every day office work.

We believe that when a volunteer chooses to volunteer at Sunnyview, the service they provide enhances the quality of care to our patients.  Because of the vital role volunteers play in the every day functioning of the hospital, they are highly respected by our employees.

Must be between 15 and 18 years of age and must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.  We are especially looking for juniors who can volunteer after school and/or on the weekends, holidays, or holiday breaks.

Interested?  Please contact us at Volunteer Office (518) 386-3631 OR  Joan Laviolette at (518) 386-3631 or joan.laviolette@sphp.com.

SUNY OCC Fire Protection Technology Program

I am the Program Coordinator for the Fire Protection Technology program at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.  Our program is intended for anyone interested in a career in fire & emergency services.

Students come out of our program with an associate’s degree, firefighter certifications, and an EMT card.  We work with all students on career placement.

Workforce Development Institute Statewide Pre-Apprentice Program (SPAP)

Partnering with the NYS Building & Construction Trades Council, WDI (Workforce Development Institute) has developed a Statewide Pre-Apprentice Program with the primary focus to assist the current local apprenticeship readiness programs and where needed develop new programs. This partnership represents the union construction industry’s training and workforce development outreach to underserved communities throughout the state, with an emphasis on women and people of color.

Standardized training using the approved NABTU – North America Building Trades Union – MC3 curriculum and certified instructors is one of the “best practices” that will be shared across the state though the Statewide Pre-Apprentice Program (SPAP). The MC3 curriculum is continuously updated and encourages local support and input to continue to be relevant.

Entry and completion of the SPAP has been proven to be a successful way to provide entry into the NYS Registered Apprentice Programs and provide a pathway towards the middle class for underserved communities.
