Just remember that the process of getting recruited requires a lot of hard work and no scholarship or opportunity to play in college comes easy. Also completing everything in this guide is not a guarantee of being recruited and earning that opportunity. It requires good grades (minimum C’s but you should be getting B’s), talent and ability, work ethic and a high level of character.
Everyone's experience is going to different. It is not the same for all. That journey may be determined by your athletic and/or academic abilities. The conditions or climate of recruiting can determine what happens. College coaches and teams have needs they are trying to fill and even though you may be a good athlete some schools may already have enough players in a certain position and not need you.
Remember that your head coach and assistant coaches are your best asset when it comes to speaking/communicating with college coaches and making sure you are taking the right steps in the process. Give it your best shot and you’ll have no regrets.
The main difference between the different divisions of college football is the size of the school, the level of competition and availability of scholarships.
no athletic scholarships
only academic or merit based scholarships available along with financial aid
Need 3.0 GPA or better in most cases and strong academic background
Higher GPA usually equals more aid
With strong academic backgrounds you can receive financial and merit scholarships to pay for majority of your expenses
Average student enrollment 1,800
FCS (Football Championship Series)
63 athletic scholarships that can divided up and given as partial
Some top athletes are given full-rides
Typically schools with 2,000-5,000 students
FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision)
85 athletic scholarships that can not divided up and all athletes on a full-ride unless they are a walk-on
Average student enrollment 10,000
85 Scholarships can be awarded (but not in California)
Some schools will offer full scholarships paying for all expenses
Some have partial scholarships only
Some JC’s offer dorms to live on campus and have football experience
Good option to better your academic standing
Good option to improve your standing as a recruit and get into a more desirable school
Student enrollment greatly varies
To be evaluated or seen by colleges coaches must be able to see you play. If they can’t see you play then they can’t decide if you’re a good fit for their program. As you are in season, you should be going through your game film and selecting highlights. This way you can start putting together a highlight film to show college coaches.
Have a title page with your name and class year like the examples on the left
If you have a great attribute like high GPA of 3.5 or above or sub 4.8 40 yard dash then add that in
Keep the film between 3-4 minutes
Have best plays that show athletic ability in the 1st minute
Have the 1st five plays be your best play most recent plays
Plays that show your speed, how physical you can play, your hustle, your ability to tackle in space, big hits (that are legal)
If you're a 2 way player then mix best of both positions in first 5 plays
Don’t put plays where you are assisting on a tackle or getting pushed backwards
Refer to the position you are going out for and be sure to include those types of plays in your film
Twitter has become a great way to get connected to college coaches
1st Post should be your Hudl Highlight Video (include info like you see in pic above)

When you are trying to get recruited, your physical and academic abilities often determine where to begin your search. You can’t always wait for schools to find you. Unless you're on the ESPN Top 100 recruits list, you have to promote yourself. You have to reach out to coaches and show your interest. If you are really interested in a school, sometimes a phone call is much more meaningful than sending a link on Twitter.
You need to remember that hundreds of thousands of high school football players are trying to do the same thing you are doing. You need to have talent, grades, size and work ethic to be recruitable. 2.5 GPA vs a 3.0 GPA separates thousands of athletes which means you need to focus your search on where you want to go. If you’re not a highly talented athlete with good size you need to keep your options open. California is very limited in options to play. The more open you are to out of state, the better your chances are of earning a scholarship to play somewhere.
The more specific you can be when searching for school, the more you will maximize your time. A good tool you can use to start looking is going to the NCSA website college map for different colleges in different states. Google the school and look into what they offer academically, pictures of the campus and athletic facilities to get an idea of what it’s like there.
Every division level has different academic standards when it comes to attending their school. And then many schools have much higher standards than what the NCAA or NAIA requires to attend. For instance, division 1 programs like Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (which is a Cal State University or CSU) requires a 3.4 GPA minimum to attend or USD requires a 3.1 GPA.
You need to know where you stand before pursuing a school. Get with your counselor or coach to look over your academics and see what your eligible for.
This website is where you will register as an athlete to play college sports if you are going to any of the NCAA divisions.
If you think you will be recruited by NCAA Division 1 or 2 programs then you must be registered with the NCAA. They will make sure that you qualify academically.
Go here to register: https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/
Go see your counselor if you need to get the registration fee waived.
The NAIA Eligibility Center serves the same purpose of making sure you are qualified and it helps coaches/schools search your information quickly to make sure you qualify to play in NAIA institutions.
Go here to register: https://play.mynaia.org/
Division 3 school eligibility is not managed by the NCAA like Division 1 and 2. Each school requires you to apply and enroll at their school to become eligible.
You must be accepted into the university based on the same standards that non-athlete students would have. You must ask the coach of the school you're interested in to know more about eligibility.
Yes. All students (student-athletes or not) can receive financial aid through different schools. When playing for any level of football you are often eligible to receive financial aid which you do not have to pay back like a loan. In order to receive this you must sign up for FAFSA. In order receive any scholarship of any kind you must sign up.
In order to receive any financial assistance like scholarships or aid from any university, you must complete the FAFSA application process. This should be done early because in order for the schools to offer you the scholarship they will often want this completed before creating a formal offer letter.
Go to fafsa.gov to complete this. You can also download the FAFSA app for Apple or Android.
