Awards + Recognitions
GLLP graduates may earn additional honors for their language proficiency by meeting the requirements for the California State Seal of Biliteracy and/or the Grossmont Union High School District Seal of Triliteracy. These recognitions are separate from the GLLP course requirements for program completion, and may be bestowed on students outside the GLLP program. Both awards require a student show proficiency in English and one or more world languages as measured by overall GPA and formal assessments like the CAASPP and AP exams.
The State Seal of Biliteracy (SSB) is an award given by the California Department of Education in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two languages by high school graduation. This award is available to all California high school students. The State Seal of Biliteracy is awarded prior to graduation in the senior year; the Grossmont Union High School District determines student eligibility at all GUHSD school sites based on the state's criteria (AB 815, AB 1142).
To receive the California Seal of Biliteracy, high school graduates must:
1) Complete all English language arts requirements for graduation with an overall grade point average of 2.0 or above in those classes.
2) Pass the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) for English Language Arts (ELA), administered in grade 11, at or above the “standard met” achievement level.
3) Exhibit proficiency in one or more languages other than English, demonstrated through one of the following methods:
Passing a world language Advanced Placement examination with a score of 3 or higher.
Completing a four-year high school course of study in a world language, attaining an overall grade point average of 3.0 or above in that course of study (weighted GPA in this subject area is used for calculation).
The GUHSD Seal of Triliteracy was developed by the Grossmont Union High School District in order to recognize students who have studied and attained proficiency in three languages by high school graduation. The GUHSD Seal of Triliteracy takes the form of a gold seal on the student diploma and is awarded when students meet the requirements for the California Seal of Biliteracy AND exhibit proficiency in at least two languages other than English.
To qualify for the GUHSD Seal of Triliteracy, high school graduates must:
