About Us
What Does It Means to be in NJROTC?
Being in NJROTC represents something greater than yourself. Wearing the uniform representing the United State of America, the Navy, and yourself. A NJROTC cadet stands out from the crowd demonstrating the Navy’s core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. Those in NJROTC strive to improve their community, uplift those around them, and reach their fullest potential.
What is NJROTC?
NJROTC stands for Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps. It is a military based program that teaches students leadership, discipline, and military knowledge. The students partake in many activities such as uniform inspection, physical training, and drill with student leaders planning and executing events. These leadership positions and responsibilities give cadets firsthand experience leading others and working through issues. Cadets in leadership positions help to uplift less experienced cadets, assisting them in reaching their full potential as a leader and well-rounded citizen. Joining any JROTC does NOT mean that your child is required or obligated to join any of the Armed Forces— It is simply an opportunity to expose students to military organization, structure, activities, discipline, and mindset.
Scholarship and Career Opportunities
If your student stays in our JROTC program for 3+ years, they could recieve scholarship opportunities for ROTC in college. These scholarship offers typically include a full ride at the college of the student's choice, with the obligation of commissioning into the military after college graduation. The process of accepting this scholarship and taking ROTC in college is the path to commissioning as an officer for any branch of the military. Although we are a Navy JROTC, college ROTC scholarship opportunities may be offered by any military branch.
Our JROTC unit also supports those who would not like to join the Armed Forces after graduation.
Class Expectations
Motivations - Cadets are expected to show up to class motivated and excited for class. They should be ready to face the challenge of the day and be willing to learn.
Discipline - Cadets should be disciplined. Being willing to follow orders from both instructors and student leaders.
Confidence - Cadets should be confident in class. NJROTC is a judgement free zone where cadets are expected to be loud while speaking and should be proud of who they are and what they represent.
Respect - Cadets are expected to treat others with respect despite differences. Any forms of bullying or harassment are not tolerated in and outside the classroom.
Teamwork - Cadets need to be able to work with other cadets. Building comradery with others and team building skills is one of our biggest goals as an NJROTC.
Cadets are held to a higher standard than ordinary high school students are, meaning they will be expected to put more work into volunteering, events, participation, conduct, grades, etc.
Attendance
Cadets are expected to be on time to class everyday. Cadets may be expected to make up for missed class or missed participation. Depending on what cadets missed in class they will be expected to make it up in different ways. (Ex. attending morning PT, attending drill practice, etc.). If cadets are found to be skipping class, it will both affect their citizenship and grade in the class.
Grading
Cadets will be graded on their attendance and participation in activities in class. Each day of the week cadets participate in different activities: Academic lessons on Mondays, drill on Tuesday, personnel inspection on Wednesday, and physical training on Thursday and Fridays. There is only one out of class event where attendance is required, being our Annual Military Inspection. Other events are not required, but are highly encouraged, such as our annual Cadet Ball and Battalion Field Meet. These events can be used to make up missed attendance and improve grades.
Supplies
All required items, such as Navy Service Uniforms and Navy Physical Training gear, are supplied by our NJROTC unit. It is the job of the cadet to keep track and take care of their uniform items and Navy PT gear. Cadets will be billed for lost, missing, or damaged items. They will be taught how to take care of uniforms, and will be supported by their student leaders and peers.
Additional Information
Supporting Your NJROTC Cadet
Being a High School student can be very difficult and stressful for some. Making sure to check in on your cadets and providing them support can significantly lower tension. Making sure your cadet is on time to school, is doing well in classes, and is able to attend events and activities is just a small part you play in the success of your cadet. Proper uniform wear and grooming is an additional way you can help support your cadet. A large part of wearing uniform includes looking squared away and sharp; cadets will be showing their pride in our unit, school, military, and country by caring for their uniforms and staying within the regulations during wear. Volunteering to help our unit and donating funds or equipment also positively changes the experiences cadets have in our program. You will not only be able to fund fun school events (such as Cadet Ball, field trips, etc.) for your child, but also the other 150+ NJROTC students here at Grossmont!
Concerns and Complaints
If there are any concerns or complaints to be had, it should be brought up to our Senior Naval Science Instructor, Lt. Col. Jonathon Sabado, USMC (Ret.) at jsabado@guhsd.net.
