Causes and Effects of Depression

What Causes Depression

According to Harvard research,

“there are many possible causes of depression, including faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability, stressful life events, medications, and medical problems. It's believed that several of these forces interact to bring on depression.” Due to this, depression is becoming more and more common within our communities. There are many events/situations within daily life that can occur and cause depression or depressive episodes, taking large tolls on many people's mental health.

Who Does It Affect?

Depression can affect people of almost all ages. Since 2000, the suicide death rates went upby 34 percent, especially including men in construction, stay at home moms, and students. Near 17.3, or 7.1 percent of, adults over age 18 are diagnosed with depression in the United States within a year. In addition, near 1.9 million children ages 3-17 are diagnosed with depression each year.

How Big Of a Problem is It?

Depression is a very big problem. It affects more than 264 million people worldwide, causing near 800,000 suicides every year. Depression is constantly increasing, not only in some communities, but globally. Anything that can lead to death is a very serious problem, and depression is more than just that. It can mentally and physically hurt anyone it affects, and it is important that everyone is educated about what it is and how to prevent it.
