Students are considered college and career ready when they have the knowledge, skills, and academic preparation necessary to enroll and succeed in college level courses, enter and succeed in postsecondary workforce education, or enter directly into a job that offers gainful employment and career advancement. By offering high quality instruction, standards aligned curriculum, and relevant learning experiences, our goal is for for each student to leave us with multiple post-secondary options.

What's Happening in College & Career Readiness?
The SunPower Solar Energy Academy has been conducted over the last two years. 25 students in year one, and 21 students this year participated in and graduated from the week long program. This academy is an intensive work-based learning experience where students work in collaborative teams as a solar start-up company and design a residential solar system. Through hands-on activities, industry tours, and lectures from solar professionals students learn trending professional solar information about project scope, design, financial and environmental economics. The academy has been hosted by Cuyamaca College both years.

Next Generation of Great Teachers in East County Competition Event
On Wednesday May 17, Education Pathway students from Grossmont, Granite Hills, and Mount Miguel High School competed in the first ever Next Generation of Great Teachers in East County Competition Event, held at Grossmont College. 10 teams of 2 students each presented a stem lesson that they developed for elementary age students. The teams were judged by a panel of judges, which included our Superintendent Dr. Tim Glover. In the end, the team of Williams and Lewis from Mt. Miguel High School took first place in the competition. Congratulations to all who participated.
On Friday May 12, The College & Career Readiness department, in collaboration with Grossmont Adult Education, and the Grossmont Cuyamaca Community College District hosted an Apprenticeship Fair at Grossmont College. Nearly 20 Apprenticeship programs from San Diego and Imperial Counties attended the event, along with over 160 students from GUHSD. The students were given the opportunity to attend several workshops including, “An Overview of the Trades”, “Females in Apprenticeships”, and “Professional Skills”.
Outstanding Classified Employee of the Fourth Quarter
The College & Career Readiness Department would like to congratulate Marlyn Slusher, Senior Secretary for the College and Career Readiness Department, as Outstanding Classified Employee of the Fourth Quarter, 2016-2017. Marlyn was honored at the GUHSD Board Meeting last night, April 7th.
Please help us in congratulating Marlyn for her outstanding work and kind hearted demeanor. Her positive attitude and willingness to go out of her way to help others is greatly appreciated.
MVHS students competed in the 50th Anniversary SKILLS USA State Championships.
The competition took place over four days. The students represented the pride of being a Monarch in competition with the best of the best throughout the entire state in automotive technology. A special recognition should go to Ashley Martinez for placing in the "Top 10" of the state finalists in the Advanced Automotive competition. Another special recognition should go to Arturo Velazquez, Mark Doniza, Justin Privett and Xoraida Perez for winning the Bronze in the Automotive Service Technology "B Division." It is the first time in three years Monte Vista HS automotive program has medal in the Skills USA state championship. This year, Skills USA California has 20,000 students who competed in over 50 different competitions. The state championship represents the best ( 1st, 2nd and 3rd) from the 6 regions in the the state.
Santana High School Engineering Students compete in San Diego Regional Chevron Engineering Design Challenge
Brian McCrae, Garrett Desrosiers, and Alejo Favero worked hard and continued to represent Santana High School, CTE, and the Grossmont Union High School District well. The three students worked hard and took home the first place trophy. They have secured a spot to compete in the state championship on May 6, 2017.
CTE Student Ambassadors Program
The CTE Student Ambassadors participated in a two-day trip to Sacramento to learn more about the legislative process at the State level as part of their leadership development. Students came prepared to share with state legislators about the Grossmont Union High School District schools, CTE pathways, and their experiences as students.
They were able to observe and connect with the issues that our state legislators oversee through committee hearings, as well through individual visits with State legislators. The CTE Student Ambassadors represented GUHSD well and were welcomed by everyone they met throughout the Capitol. They were accompanied by Frank Luera, Work-based Learning Specialist, and Brenda Davis-Landini, CTE teacher and Student Ambassador Advisor.
The students spoke with Assemblymember Shirley Weber before a committee hearing and met with Senator Joel Anderson's staff, who took them into the Governor's office. They also visited both the Senate and Assembly floor, with Senator Jim Nielsen and Assemblyman Randy Voepel, respectively.
Our Student Ambassadors continuously demonstrate outstanding leadership and communication skills, while providing service to their school, the district, and the community. They are passionate about the benefits of CTE classes and outstanding role models for their peers.
Santana High School Health & Science Complex Tour

Health Career Pathway students from Santana High School visited the Grossmont College Health & Sciences Complex to learn about the Allied Health and Nursing Programs that they offer. Students learned about the variety of programs offered and had the opportunity to gain some hands-on experience learning skills that would be necessary for careers in respiratory therapy, cardiovascular technology, and nursing. Thank you Grossmont College staff and volunteers for welcoming our students!
Grossmont Healthcare District Scholarship Recognition

The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD), a public agency that supports various health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County region, recently awarded scholarships to 25 GUHSD high school students who have expressed interest in a career as a healthcare professional. The scholarships were presented at the GHD board meeting on Friday, March 17.
Students were selected by school counselors and health pathway coordinators for their academic excellence, outstanding citizenship and a desire to improve our world in the healthcare field. Two students from each high school will receive either a $3,000 or $1,500 check from GHD at the end of their first semester of college, contingent on completing at least nine units with a grade point average of 2.0 or better.
GHD has honored more than 500 local high school students interested in a healthcare career with scholarship grants since 1999. Over the years, hundreds of local high school students have received individual scholarships totaling more than $1 million.

Ethics in Business Conference 2017
El Cajon Mayor Bills Wells Addresses the Importance of Ethics.
The San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce and the Grossmont Union High School District presented the annual Ethics in Business Conference for 160 advanced CTE students from seven district schools on Tuesday, March 14, at Cuyamaca College. The annual event’s goal is to train the next generation to become principled leaders. The half-day conference challenged students to consider ideas and situations that are designed to help them think critically about ethics in business situations.
The award-winning Ethics in Business Program, which is presented by the Chamber’s Business Education Committee, was developed in 1992 to educate our high school seniors about situations and ethical dilemmas that occur in the workplace. Back by popular demand was keynote speaker Jeff Bramstedt, former US Navy Seal and film/commercial stuntman. He discussed the value and importance of ethics and how individuals can make a difference. Many San Diego East County Chamber members participated in the program by facilitating table discussions with groups of students.
New C & CR Logo
Digital Arts students from across the district worked on developing a logo for the new College & Career Readiness department at Grossmont Union High School District. The winning logo was chosen from among a dozen entries, and will be used to represent the College & Career Readiness department.
The College & Career Readiness Department would like to congratulate Mick McMurray from Mount Miguel High School for being the CTE Golden Apple Award winner for 2016/2017.
Mick has been a teacher leader in Career Technical Education since he started in 2005 in the Arts, Media and Entertainment Pathway. He is always willing to participate on district and school level committees to share his expertise, as well as, to help individual teachers by providing them the support they need to be successful. Mick has a unique combination of artistic skills and a deep understanding of advanced technologies required in an Arts, Media, and Entertainment Pathway to keep his teaching current and relevant to industry. Mick is also a teacher leader at Mount Miguel High School, where he has served in many roles to ensure that all students have access to a quality education with the support they need to thrive. Congratulations Mick!
West Hills Health Pathway Students Visit UC Irvine Medical Center Urology Department
Students from the West Hills High School Health Pathway had the amazing opportunity to visit the UC Irvine Medical Center Urology Department and get some hands on experience. The students were given the chance to practice suturing, interact with a Da Vinci surgery robot, and performed an endoscopic seed removal surgery from a red pepper. Check out the slideshow to see what they did. Thank you UC Irvine Medical Center for this fantastic opportunity!
On Thursday February 16, 5 schools participated in the High School Hospitality Conference hosted at Golden Hall in Downtown San Diego.
Among these schools were the Culinary Pathways at El Cajon Valley, Santana, Granite Hills, and IDEA center, as well as the Marketing, Sales, and Service Pathway from Mount Miguel High School. The students were welcomed with a continental breakfast and Keynote speech by Claudia Sandoval, the Season 6 winner of the Fox Network’s hit TV series MasterChef. Following the Keynote, students were grouped up and given tours at a variety of restaurants and hotels from downtown San Diego to the Coronado Island. These hotels and restaurants included Tom Ham’s Lighthouse, Lou and Mickey’s, Omni San Diego, and the Coronado Island Marriott just to name a few. Students were given a behind the scenes tour at each establishment and treated to samples of the restaurant favorites. After the tours, the students returned to Golden Hall where they attended a Career Fair to learn about careers in the Hospitality Industry along with a catered lunch.
