4th Grade STEM Curriculum: Innovating and Designing the Future

Our 4th Grade STEM program empowers students to become innovative thinkers and problem-solvers, equipping them with the skills they need to thrive in a technology-driven world. We focus on hands-on learning, collaboration, and critical thinking, challenging students to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios and explore advanced STEM concepts.

Click above to be taken to a summary of the the 4th Grade Curriculum.

Websites & Apps:

  • Code.org (K-12 section): 4th grade is ready for more advanced block-based coding and is likely ready to dive into text-based coding languages like Python or JavaScript. Explore their full range of courses.

  • Scratch: A powerful visual programming language that allows kids to create interactive stories, games, and animations. A great platform for project-based coding and learning more advanced programming concepts.

  • Tynker: Offers a variety of coding courses and activities for kids, including block-based coding, text-based coding (Python, JavaScript), game design, and even app development.

  • National Geographic Kids: Offers engaging and informative content about animals, nature, science, history, and culture, with more complex articles, videos, and interactive features.

  • NASA Climate Kids: A good resource for learning about climate and environmental science, with content geared towards slightly older children.

  • BrainPOP: Provides animated videos and quizzes on a wide range of topics, including science, math, technology, social studies, and English. (May require a subscription)

  • Mystery Science: Offers short videos and activities that explore science mysteries and encourage curiosity. (Some content may require a subscription)

  • Epic!: A digital library with a wide selection of books, including many on STEM topics.

  • Khan Academy: Offers free courses and practice exercises on a variety of subjects, including math, science, and computer programming. A valuable resource for reinforcing classroom learning.

  • Google Earth: Explore the world, learn about geography, and potentially use it for project-based learning, research, and virtual field trips.

  • Hour of Code: This website offers a wide variety of coding tutorials for all ages and skill levels, including many that are appropriate for 4th graders.

Hands-on & Offline Activities (adaptable for websites/apps too):

  • Building Sets (LEGO, Magna-Tiles, K'NEX, VEX IQ, Fischertechnik): Encourage complex building projects and challenges. Explore different types of simple and compound machines and their applications. Introduce robotics concepts.

  • Science Kits: Age-appropriate science kits can provide hands-on experiments and learning experiences. Look for kits that focus on specific science concepts and encourage experimentation and data analysis.

  • Engineering Challenges: Design and build solutions to real-world problems, such as building a bridge, designing a water filtration system, creating a Rube Goldberg machine, or designing a solar-powered oven.

  • Coding Games (Robot Turtles, Code Master, Cubetto, Turing Tumble, Circuit Maze): Reinforce coding concepts through board games and other offline activities.

  • Gardening and Nature Studies: Plant seeds, observe plant growth, learn about plant life cycles, ecosystems, and the importance of pollinators. Conduct experiments related to plant growth and environmental factors.

  • Cooking and Baking: Explore measurement, fractions, chemical reactions, and the science of food through cooking and baking. Design your own recipes and experiment with ingredients.

  • Art Projects with a STEM Twist: Combine art with science or engineering, such as building sculptures with recycled materials, creating nature-inspired art, designing and building miniature sets for stop-motion animation, exploring the science of color, or creating tessellations.

  • Field Trips: Visit science museums, nature centers, zoos, aquariums, planetariums, engineering firms, or other educational venues.

  • Model Building (airplanes, cars, rockets, robots): Explore principles of aerodynamics, mechanics, and design through model building. Introduce robotics kits and programming.

Key Considerations for 4th Grade STEM:

  • Project-Based Learning: Implement more complex and longer-term projects that require students to apply their STEM knowledge and skills.

  • Collaboration: Emphasize teamwork and collaboration on STEM activities.

  • Real-World Connections: Connect STEM concepts to students' lives, current events, and the world around them.

  • Inquiry-Based Learning: Encourage students to ask questions, investigate their own ideas, design their own experiments, and draw conclusions based on evidence.

  • Engineering Design Process: Reinforce the Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Test, Improve) and encourage students to document their design process thoroughly, including iterations and improvements.

  • Data Analysis and Interpretation: Have students collect, analyze, and interpret data from their experiments and projects. Introduce more advanced graphing and data representation skills.

  • Scientific Method: Reinforce the scientific method and have students design and conduct their own experiments.

  • Introduce Basic Statistics: Introduce basic statistical concepts like mean, median, and mode.

Remember to supervise children when they are using websites and apps, and choose content that aligns with their interests and learning level. Many of the hands-on activity ideas can be extended or enhanced with related online content.
