Get to know Ancient Athens and the role of the Assembly and the Council of 500 by visiting the ancient sites. Then compare with our Alberta Assembly.
Introduce some of the surviving landmarks that still exist in Athens using Google Earth.
Some locations: The Pnyx, The Acropolis, The Agora
Students will use the British Museum site to take a tour of Ancient Athens and learn which groups take part in activities in various parts of the city.
Students will watch this excellent video and answer questions about the structure of Athenian democracy with this slideshow.

Students will create a brochure highlighting the aspects of Athenian democracy with this template.

Summative Assessment / Project
Part 1: Students will select an individual to ‘follow’ throughout the day. As the day progresses, they will describe this person’s role in Ancient Athenian society, as well as their level of participation and decision making within the government.
Part 2: Discussion of roles in society.
Part 3: Summary - "To what extent do you feel that your role in Athens was FAIR and EQUITABLE? "
(As an extension, students can turn their slides into an animation and record their voice to tell the story) Docs365 GIFmaker can turn slides into GIFs.
Students will choose a person to be for a day in Ancient Athens. They will describe this person’s role in Ancient Athenian society, as well as their level of participation and decision making within the government.
Students can also create a hockey card for each of the groups in Athens.
Note: do this activity after reviewing the different roles in society- then use this as a tie in to the places and the people. There is a Google Doc and Slideshow version. The Slideshow is easier to gather photos/ diagrams of the locations.
Assessment: this could be a formative assessment, but could also be used as an assessment of the roles of people in Athens society.
Students will examine pots from Ancient Greece and describe the values represented in each artifact.
Students will analyze Wampum Belts of the Iroquois Confederacy and create a belt that represents one facet of Iroquois Society.
