What is a Host Family?

A host family opens up their home to international students in order to provide accommodations, meals, and support while they study abroad. Typically, host families have children of their own who study at the same school you'll be attending and will provide you with a safe and supportive environment while you build your English language and cultural skills.

Your host family is participating in the program because they want to meet someone from another country and exchange cultural knowledge. They will welcome you into their home as though you were their own child and will be happy to show you interesting places, provide support to you while you study in Canada, and share their favourite activities with you. Many Canadian families enjoy doing a variety of activities together. They may travel, hike, swim, and have social times together in the Spring, Summer and Autumn.  In Winter, many families tend to skate, sled, ski/snowboard, watch movies, or attend various sports events or concerts.

Your host family will treat you as a member of their own family, and you will have the same responsibilities as any one else in your host  family. This could include doing your share of household chores, and respecting the rules of your new family.
