ASSESSING COLOURS, INSIDE AND OUT
The world in which we live today, is least capable of judging a person beyond colour. And accept it nor not, there is a natural mechanism fitted in almost everyone's mind, to conclude a person based on his or her skin colour. Hence it is a subject that many people will secretly disagree with.
Colorism is a form of discrimination in which people are treated differently based on the tones of their skin. It is also known as shadeism, because the shady colour (dark) is treated indifferently, or rather inferiorly. In the ancient eras, fair people were considered rich because they were assumed to be able to remain indoors while the servants laboured under the harsh sun. Fair skin is equated with beauty and superiority. Not only in India but in many other countries like US, Europe; it continues to influence social status, marital prospects, employment and other domains.
Instead of asking dark people to love themselves, shouldn't we ask the society to love dark people? And on a positive note, many people are coming out to fight against colour discrimination. It is being addressed at the community level. Indian goddess 'Kali' ('black' in english) is worshipped as a symbol of violence and power. Black exemplifies Lord Krishna, Rama and Shiva. Great personalities like Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Serena Williams, Will Smith and many more have amazingly cut across colour boundaries.
So let us encourage everyone to embrace skin colour as the reason of our uniqueness and not our differences. And soon the world will get to know each other beyond colour.
