India is located in south of Asia. The name India comes from the river Indus located in Punjab. The name Bharat is used for the country in their constitution referring to the ancient mythological ruler, Bharat, whose story is told in the Indian epic Mahabharata.

The Indian history can be traced back to one of the earliest civilizations in which the world grew on the bank of river Indus 5000 years ago. The main occupation of the people of this civilization was agriculture and craft. The area was divided into states and the people living constantly had differences with each other.

Dynastic rule nonetheless started with the Mauryan dynasty. During the Mauryan dynasty, Ashoka the Great was one of the greatest emperors of that time. He had expanded and reinforce the empire and brought peace. Ashoka promoted dhamma and spreaded Buddhism all over the world.

The Vardhana dynasty also known as The Pushyabhuti dynasty. It came into prominence after the Gupta dynasty, which is also known as the golden era of ancient India. During the time of his reign, Harshavardhana’s empire spread from north India to the Narmada river in central India. He built the Nanda university in Bihar which attracted many artists and scholars not only from India but all over the world.
