Rio Carnival (Brazil)

Rio Carnival is a festival celebrated in Rio, a city in Brazil, every year just after Lent. The Rio Carnival is a big festival because the number of visits per day can reach two million people. All the people gather on the streets and enjoy the biggest carnival in the world. There are many parades on the day for public entertainment. The first Rio Carnival was held in 1723 to pay homage to the divine and to the great waters. A typical carnival parade consists of revelers, floats etc. To attend the carnival you can make or join a samba school ( a group of people making parades to entertain the audience). At that time it was celebrated by offering many fests to the God Of Wine, but now it is celebrated in a modern way by parades etc. It was actually inspired by Entrudo, the Portugal festival. Due to the carnival, the samba song is considered as the national Brazilian song.

Carnival

The carnival in Venice was first celebrated in 1268. As time passed people started doing many destructive activities, many laws were passed in attempting to restrict the festival. Due to this, even wearing masks are forbidden to watch over any subversive activities. Masks have always been the main feature of the carnival. Earlier the wearing of masks was allowed from the festival of Santo Stefano to the midnight of shove. At that time most of the people spent a major proportion of the year disguised. Due to that, the mask makers also known as Mascareri had a special position in the society and had their own set of laws and guild in the country.

We created masks that represent festivals such as Carnevale di Venezia, and Mardi Gras. We used masks, glitter glue, feathers, sequins and a variety of pom pom balls. It took us about 5 class periods to finish these masks, and we each did two.

Onion Festival (Germany)

The Weimar Onion Festival attracts about 350,000 people every year, whereas the population of the city is just 65,000. The Onion Festival has been around since 1653. It is an event celebrating music, beer, tradition and of course onions. Onions are decorated as dolls, which hang from every stall. They are plaited together, in a traditional way, and are decorated with dried flowers of yellow, white and lilac. Food stalls are put up as well. Young women from Weimar can apply to become the Queen of the onion market to represent Weimar and its popular festivals. The Onion Festival lasts for three days and is celebrated in October, mostly from Friday to Sunday.

Mardi Gras

Anyone can celebrate Mardi Gras, but the main people that celebrate it are Christian or Catholic. In French, Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras celebrates the types of foods eaten on these days, like shrimp, sausage, chocolate pancakes, dips, seafood, and more. Mardi Gras is a few days before Lent and the day before Ash Wednesday (February/March). It is celebrated so people will be happy before fasting during Lent. Mardi Gras is celebrated around the world, but the one state that they celebrate the most in is Louisiana.

Maghi (India)

The next day of Lohri is known as Maghi or Makar Sankranti, a day that signifies the beginning of the month of Maghi. On this day, kheer is prepared in sugarcane juice. This day also commemorates the martyrdom of the 'forty Sikh disciples' who died in the defense of Guru Gobind Singh. For Sikhs, Maghi means the festival celebrated at Muktsar, a town in Punjab, to commemorate the heroic deeds of the 'Chali Mukte', who laid down their lives fighting against the imperial army and marching for Guru Gobind Singh. In Muktsar, the pilgrims take a dip in the sacred Sarovar( holy water tank) and visit several shrines connected with the battle. A big march of Sikhs from the main shrine to the Gurudwara marks the conclusion of the three - day celebration.

Carnival of Binche (Belgium)

The Carnival of Binche in Belgium takes place in February. It is one of the most famous celebrations there. This festival is designated as a masterpiece of 'The Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity' by UNESCO because of its originality. Every year this festival attracts many people. This carnival is celebrated by wearing costumes and folkloric traditions such as throwing oranges. Everyone dresses up as peasants, harlequins, pierrots and gillies. They wear costumes which are decorated with red, black and yellow (symbols of lions, crowns and stars). They wear a mask and a magnificent hat. This carnival is a colorful and culturally rich event.

La Tomatina (Spain)

La Tomatina is a festival celebrated near a town Bunol in Spain on the last Wednesday of August every year. It lasts between 10 a.m to 11 a.m in the morning and begins with a challenger who climbs up a pole having a piece of ham at the top to obtain it. After taking the piece of ham, a fight starts in which all the people get themselves involved in throwing tomatoes on each other. It is believed that La Tomatina started in the year 1945 when a man was pushed out from the crowd. He flew into anger and began hitting tomatoes on others that were kept at the vegetable stall. This festival was banned in the 1950s by the Spanish Government. It was calculated that 150 tons of tomatoes are being wasted.

After the fight ends, the firefighters wash this place which is stained with tomatoes but when it is done the city looks very clean. La Tomatina is known as the World’s Biggest Food Fight.

Carnivals and Festivals of Afghanistan

There are different carnivals in Afghanistan but two of them are very important the first one is milah gole sorkh and the second one is milah gole naringe both of them has lots of fan around Afghanistan.

Milah golm naringe is celebrated in jalal abad but mile gole naringe is celebrated in Balkh province.
