Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals is dedicated to the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, the provision of access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable institutions at all levels.
In India, the judiciary is overburdened due to the large number of pending cases, though the caseload has declined slightly – from 41.5 lakh in 2014 to 38.5 lakh in 2015. India has prioritised the strengthening of justice through government initiatives including Pragati Platform, a public grievance redressal system, and the Development of Infrastructure Facilities for the Judiciaryincluding Gram Nyayalays for villages.
