SOCIAL DISABILITIES AND OLD BELIEFS

Women have been subjected to various social disabilities for a long time

Female InfantIcIde

Female infanticide is the practice of killing a girl child soon after her birth. This shows that a girl child is denied the right to live. Even today in some areas such things are happening now.

SatI System

The Sati system was a social custom in which a widow was forced to die on the funeral pyre of her dead husband. Raja Ram Mohan Roy worked hard to remove this evil. It was abolished in 1829.

Dowry System

Dowry is the money or jewellery brought by the bride for the man who she marries. Parents used to give many gifts to their daughter of their own free will. But in course of time for dowry became compulsory. Due to demand of dowry, many girls remain unmarried. We feel very sad to hear about dowry-related killings or suicides. Demanding or giving of dowry is an offence.

ChIld MarrIage

In India the institution of child marriage still persists. As a result, in cases of premature death of the husband, the girl leads her whole life as a widow. Moreover, it is so risky for the mother, who herself is a girl, to give birth to children. Child marriage is an offence.

RemarrIage of WIdows

If young widows were not employed, they had to depend on others to survive. They should be encouraged to remarry.

No Share In FamIly Property

Earlier woman had no share in the family property. But now the Hindu Succession Act grants women the right to property.

No Equal Pay For Equal Work

The women were paid lesser wages as compared to men even though they work equal to men. This is wrong and it also denies equality between men and women.

VIolence AgaInst Women

Women have been frequently subjected to violence. It affects them physically and mentally. It shakes their confidence. It amounts to the denial or basic human rights to them

Gender Inequality is one of the most discussed topics whenever cultural heritages clash with modern beliefs. Almost every religion has had a precursor showing the weakness of women and their dependence on men. This can be seen directly or indirectly. For example, in Hindu culture, the system of Sati and the treatment given to widows was not necessary, and in ancient times, not practicing them did not determine the chastity of women. But in later centuries, when the supreme ancient knowledge, it became a necessity which ruined lives of women. What is a woman’s fault if her husband dies? Truly, insulting a woman just because she is a widow is an insult to Fate made by God Himself. In Islam, the malpractice of Triple Talaq, which created dread in the minds of Muslim women is extremely cruel. Seeking divorce is normal and may happen if a relationship falters, but it needs to be discussed by the husband and wife because it is a major blow and turner in a person’s life. But, doing this at any point of time just because of momentary anger is absurd. Not only that, the concealment of women still remains dominant in Islam, and Muslim women are hardly able to carry on on their aspirations. There are numerous other examples which show the inequality meted out to women. Yet, if we have to create a perfect society, where harmony prevails as mentioned in our epics, then the first step we should take on this long path is to give respect to everybody, including women. In our culture, wives are called “Ardhanginis” which literally means the ‘better half’ of men. We also worship women or the female spirits in the form of Nature or ‘Prakriti’, the Earth or ‘Bhudevi’ and the Goddess or ‘Shakti’. And if the Lord pervades in all, then how can we be biased against the very form we worship? ‌

RELIGION

Religion has been around for a huge number of years, when religion previously began our reality was extraordinary. Men were respected higher than ladies. Ladies weren't permitted to work or go anyplace. Today despite the fact that ladies get more regard than they did before there is still inequality. The status of ladies in the public eye is exceptionally different around the world. Among numerous significant attributes related with the separation of sex disparity is religion, which itself must be viewed as a liquid idea with translations and practices 'inserted' and therefore differing as for social and recorded relations. Conceding the unpredictability of the issues, some strict standards and conventions can add to the development of sex imbalances and to subordinate the job of ladies in the public eye Male strict specialists make a special effort to reject ladies, yet numerous ladies tail them in any case. . Men are accepted to be of higher profound authority than ladies, and numerous religions don't permit the full appointment of ladies into the church. A few religions deny ladies from sitting at the front in their places of love, and a few spots of love decline passage to ladies. Strict writings bolster ideas of the psychological, good, and profound inadequacy of ladies, and religion is utilized to legitimize net types of sexual orientation imbalance all around the globe ladies' commitment to the formation of legacy is underestimated and they are frequently denied from the likelihood to take an interest in its distinguishing proof. In legacy understanding, their job is frequently confined to "bearing and birthing the men who prevailing to it. The rejection of ladies' commitments to the making of legacy is halfway because of the way that in all social orders, ladies' exercises have been generally related to, and consigned to, the private or household circle, while the open circle, seen as progressively pertinent, significant and renowned, has truly been men's restraining infrastructure. Angela Berners Wilson On 12 March 1994, turned into the principal ladies to be appointed as Church of England ministers
