The application of language skills is necessary for successful achievement in all subject areas. With the implementation of the new English Language Arts curriculum, we will focus on text forms and structures, oral language, vocabulary, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, writing and conventions.
For specific information regarding the new English Language Arts curriculum, please refer to the Alberta Government website: https://curriculum.learnalberta.ca/curriculum/en/c/laneng3
As parents you can help your child build comprehension skills by:
· encouraging children to have a “movie” playing in their minds as they read,
· asking children to predict or retell events in the story,
· asking questions that require them to make inferences going beyond the actual facts given,
· making connections - text to self, text to text, and text to the world.
Grade 3 Reading Minutes:
One of our goals is to foster a love for reading through good literature from a variety of sources. Daily practice at home and school will increase the students’ vocabulary and comprehension skills. Students are asked to record the number of minutes they read each day in their student planners. We expect each student to read a minimum of fifteen (15) minutes each evening. A monthly goal of 350 minutes is an expectation for all children in grade three. We will be rewarding individuals and the class as milestones (amount of time spent reading) are achieved.
*Individuals who meet the monthly reading goal will be able to choose a prize out of our prize bin. If you would like to donate a dollar store item, please send it in to the homeroom teacher. Thank you for your consideration and support.
Please record your reading minutes in your child's agenda:
Grade 3 Reading Challenge:
We challenge all Grade 3 students to explore different genres by reading 5 books by Christmas break! The challenge is to read 5 different genres from a chosen set of series. Students will do a book review for each book they read and we will keep track of the data to see what our class reads!
Check out the series they will be reading! This is the page they will complete for the book review:
