The Kentucky Autism Training Center (KATC), in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and Regional Special Education Coops (e.g. GRREC), provides learning opportunities to professionals and parents of students with autism. These opportunities are designed to increase the positive outcomes for learners with autism by the time they exit their high school experience. The establishment of “Training Sites" has been of benefit to local schools over the past several years.
Three Levels of Support
Classroom Level: Previously, classroom personnel applied to participate, and if accepted, received focused onsite technical assistance from KATC, and consultants from the Regional Special Education Coop, to enhance the school personnel’s skills to serve students with autism. An emphasis will be on coaching in the implementation of Evidence-based Practices (EBPs), particularly the "Big 5" Foundational practices:
Antecedent-based Interventions
Teaching Communication
Differential Reinforcement
Systematic Instruction and Prompting
Visual Supports
School Level: Like the classroom support level, KATC and GRREC will provide ongoing technical assistance and training. However, the School Level Training Site will be focused on providing school leadership the support to develop the capacity within the school to meet the needs of students with autism. An emphasis will be placed on establishing problem-solving process and team.
District Level: Like the school support level, KATC and GRREC will provide ongoing technical assistance and training. The emphasis is at the District Level Training Site will be focused on providing district and school leadership the support to develop the capacity within the district to meet the needs of students with autism. An emphasis will be placed on establishing problem-solving process and team.
Determining Level of Support
Upon acceptance as a KATC Training Site, the KATC Field Training Coordinator and Low Incidence Consultant assigned to the district will work with district and school personnel to determine the level of support appropriate for the particular training site. In the past, KATC personnel have learned that different educators begin this process at varying levels of expertise. Tiered supports to meet the level of participants has proven to be the most beneficial in building expertise.
