The Child In Me
July 31, 2021
The child in me loves bright colors and cartoon characters. They somehow always manage to make me feel safe. Like almost every other 90’s kid, I often fell asleep watching the Disney Channel and saw just about every episode of the Rugrats, Doug, and Rocko’s Modern life at least 20 million times.
Of course this was the case if and only if I was staying at a friend or cousin's house. Why? You may wonder? Well like many kids growing up in the 90’s I didn’t have access to cable at home, so when I couldn’t visit with my friends or cousins I would resort to good “Ol’ Faithful”. Ol’ Faithful was our VHS player and it wore out playing the same 3 tapes that my sister and I used to watch and rotate every weekend while eating breakfast. (Disclosure: If you were born after the 90’s, imma save you a trip to your search bar and just leave the Wikipedia link here explaining what a VHS player is. 😸)
Those three videos, by the way, were:
The Prince of Egypt
Miss Congeniality
Bring It On
Maybe it’s the fact that I haven’t been able to see my sister for a while, but I have been feeling rather nostalgic and missing those moments when I got to “cook breakfast” and spend Saturday morning with her while watching the Prince of Egypt. I have been feeling this way for a while, and last month, I decided to do something about it. I decided to give our Saturday morning childhood breakfast dish a makeover! 🙌💛💅💇
Two blue corn tortillas, and an elevated-banana, date, chocolate smoothie later and bam! It felt like I was sitting on the couch on a Saturday morning watching Prince of Egypt right next to her...only thing is she was still missing. 😢
Watch the whole process and comment on my Tik-Tok or Instagram account. What was your go to childhood breakfast?
