As aspiring physicists we feel the need to tell others about how the world and universe works. We preach the gospel of physics to all who listen and aim to indoctrinate the general public in our passion for science. Our SPS chapter hosts and promotes several outreach events and look forward to new outreach events!
The physics roadshow is a week long event that begins at the end of the spring semester and is run by 4-6 students and two faculty sponsors. For an entire week, we travel around rural Texas and provide science demonstrations to elementary and middle schools who lack the rigor in STEM presence. Who doesn't love crushing someone with their own weight on a bed nails?
Cosmic Cafes is are events held throughout the academic year at a local coffee shop here in Abilene, Texas. Professors discuss issues they are passionate about or current research they are doing with the general public. to better inform them. With this forum-esque lecture followed by a Q&A, we encourage the engagement of people in our local community with the passion that drives us onto discovery.
Among one of the rarer events our chapter was privileged to host, the lunar eclipse falling in the spring semester of 2019 was a phenomenal experience for our chapter and the general public. With the help of our local news, our faculty sponsor was able to inform citizens on where to watch this amazing event. Several on-campus students and Abilene residents showed up to view the sight!
