Establishing a connection with the community on campus and off campus is important to us as individuals and also as aspiring physicists. Not only is it an opportunity to meet new people but to also detach us from our endless loop of homework. We break free from the shackles of homework and into the shackles of human interaction.
The welcome barbecue is held at the beginning of every fall semester to welcome incoming freshmen into the Engineering & Physics department and is hosted by SPS. Here, the incoming freshmen learn a valuable lesson; always show up for free food. Of course, they meet professors and upper class-men in addition to the free food.
If you are looking to make yourself known in the department, forget making good first impressions. Game night is the arena in which champion is waiting to be claimed. Jokes aside, this is a great event held by the SPS in which students and professors play a variety of board games, games on consoles, and eat free pizza. That is not a typo, you read that correctly. In spirit of game night, there is a Super Smash Bros. Melee (SSBM) tournament as well and the current champion is Roy Salinas with a Mario main.
What better way than to procrastinate on homework than with the excuse of "I was literally locked in." This event is held sporadically by demand but consists of locking in students from the department with plenty of games and food.
With a few of our events with the on campus community listed, we harbor advocacy for any kind of event creating camaraderie. If you are interested in knowing more or have an idea please feel free to contact us here.
