It has been a chilly few months at Wolverines, so we have spent a lot of time indoors. We celebrated the winter weather with art and science projects. We enjoyed the Valentines holiday and spent a lot of time getting our hearts pumping with fitness time activities. We are looking forward to spring arriving soon!
During these chilly winter months the Before School program has been creating lots of winter themed crafts. Some of our favorites were the glitter skate and penguin puppets. We also embraced all the winter holidays and made crafts to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Groundhogs Day, Valentines Day and Presidents Day! We have been spending time learning new games that focus on teamwork and sportsmanship in the gym.
In January our Pre-K class explored Hibernation and Winter Wonderland! Our friends discovered how animals prepare for winter by building cozy hibernation dens with LEGOs and creating their own igloos with fun winter-themed crafts. In our sensory bin, students explored snow textures, with real snow and even made our own fake snow! Through hands-on activities and imaginative play, we embraced the magic of winter while continuing to build our early learning skills!
This past month, we jumped into Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Our friends have been practicing their letters and numbers in exciting, hands-on ways. Students worked with letter boards, traced in shaving cream, and used puzzles to match uppercase and lowercase letters. In our sensory bin, they played with playdough to form the letters of their names and explored alphabet "soup" to keep learning fun and engaging. Our dramatic play center transformed into a classroom, where students took turns playing teacher, this may be our favorite theme so far!
In January, our kindergarten theme centered around health and wellness. We filled the days with a variety of exciting winter games that not only promoted physical fitness but also encouraged teamwork and creativity. One of the standout activities was snowball bowling, which quickly became a fan favorite. We also loved our "snowball fights", armed with soft, fluffy snowballs, they dashed around, giggling and strategizing with their friends.
February was an exciting month for our kindergarten class as we became "Nature Explorers"! We had a blast learning about Arctic animals, hibernation, migration, and adaptation. We enjoyed some fun storytelling and watched videos that brought Arctic habitats to life. February was a fantastic month filled with exploration, creativity, and a newfound love for nature and its incredible wildlife!
Throughout the month of January, First graders learned all about hibernation! Through various crafts and engaging activities, we learned the difference between animals that hibernate, migrate, or adapt to the cold weather. We learned all about winter and how it affects nature in different regions of the world. The students enjoyed using materials found in nature to come up with creative ways to make artwork and sculptures of animals and habitats we learned about together.
February focused on STEM, specifically building challenges! They started off building with gears, magnetic tiles, legos, straws, and stacking cups! Students were challenged to try and work with others and complete specific building challenges while being timed. Some of these challenges were; build a car, build an animal, the tallest tower, and castles!
Second grade started off the new year by being STEM explorers. We studied the “Science of Sound” We learned about sound waves and made harmonicas. We also played the “Challenge Cup” game where we matched cups that contained hidden identical sounds. Next, we studied the “Science of Light” We learned the difference between transparent, translucent and opaque using our flashlights. We then became engineers. We designed, built and tested our “Bobsleds”. We raced them and changed the design to make them go faster on the track! It was a lot of fun!
In February we traveled to China and learned about their culture. We learned the difference between Giant Pandas and Red Pandas. We celebrated the Chinese Lunar New Year, the Year of the Snake. We made 3D snakes, learned about the Zodiac animals and decorated red envelopes with coins for good luck. We also made and decorated Chinese take- out boxes and filled them with paper fortune cookies with wonderful sayings about our Cafeteria Staff. We gave it to them on Valentine’s day.
Third and fourth graders have been exploring the Arctic wilderness and its many creatures. One of our topics was penguins, we learned about different kinds of penguins, their specific features, habitats, and lifestyles. Then the students were able to create clay penguins and paint them.
In February we have been exploring the Arctic through arts and crafts. We have been using different learning artistic techniques and mediums to creatively display the beauty of nature in these Winter Months.
