First published in 1943, Johnny Tremain is a Newbery Award winning novel by the author Esther Forbes. A work of historical fiction, Johnny Tremain is set around Boston before the American Revolution. Many historical figures show up in the book, including John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Paul Revere.
Johnny Tremain is a coming-of-age story. Other main themes include the role of apprenticeship, the importance of moral character over pride, and the conflict between the Whigs and Tories before the American Revolution.
