Eligibility
Students enrolled in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade at a school in the Southwest Connecticut region are eligible to participate in the MATHCOUNTS Southwest Connecticut Chapter Competition. Students taking middle school mathematics classes but who are not full-time 6th, 7th or 8th grade students are not eligible to participate. Participation in MATHCOUNTS competitions is limited to three years for each student, though there is no limit to the number of years a student may participate in the school-based coaching phase.
If you are a parent/guardian and would like your child to compete in MATHCOUNTS Southwest Connecticut, please speak to your child’s school. Many of Southwest CT's finest middle schools participate each year. If yours doesn’t, we’d love for your school to register, or you may register as a non-school competitor later in the fall. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you or the school would like more information!
Each school may send up to 14 students. Coaches set the criteria for determining which students from his or her school participate in the Chapter Competition. Many coaches find it helpful to administer the School Competition to interested students as part of the selection process.
Four students per school are designated as the school’s official Team. Students on the Team compete individually in the Sprint and Target rounds and together in the Team round. A formula using these four members’ individual scores and their Team Round score determines the school’s overall score, which determines team prizes and advancement. Coaches must specify in advance which four students constitute the Team.
Up to ten additional students per school may participate as Individuals. These students participate in the Team round on an unofficial basis.
Team members and Individual participants alike are eligible for individual prizes, participation the Countdown Round, and advancement to the State Competition based on their Sprint and Target scores.
