The National Honor Society (NHS) is a prestigious national organization guided by the Association of Secondary School Principals. At Woodmont High School, the process for selecting new members for our chapter of the NHS begins shortly after the start of the school year. We invite students from the Junior and Senior classes to join, but being a part of NHS is about more than just academic achievement.

To qualify for membership, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 4.25 or higher. In addition to academic excellence, we look for students who demonstrate Leadership, Excellent Character, and a strong commitment to Service within the community. There is a $20 annual membership fee, and members are also required to purchase an NHS T-shirt.

The selection process is thorough. We start by identifying students who meet the GPA requirement and then seek input from teachers and staff. Faculty members evaluate students based on their Character, Leadership, and Service, scoring them from 1 to 5 in each area, with a maximum possible score of 15. To be invited to apply, students must achieve an average score of at least 12 from the teachers who provide feedback.

The NHS Advisory Board, comprised of four teachers appointed by the principal, reviews these scores and compiles a list of students who will receive application forms. Interested students will have one week to submit their applications. The committee will then review these applications, focusing particularly on community and school service as well as leadership qualities. The goal is to identify well-rounded, academically successful students who are capable of balancing their studies with extracurricular commitments.

Once inducted into the Woodmont High NHS, members must maintain their grades and complete 30 hours of service each year. No more than 5 hours of service can be credited to any single organization or group per semester, such as volunteering at a church or a soup kitchen. Members must also participate in at least four out of five school-sponsored service events.

Students who graduate in good standing will be awarded the NHS distinctive stole to wear at graduation.

Our aim is for these future leaders to continually seek ways to contribute positively to their community and beyond.
