What are Dual Credits?
Dual credit courses—whether these courses are taken at Woodmont or one of the Greenville Tech campuses, the student has the potential to earn both high school units of credit and college credit.
WHS offers the core English composition courses and medical terminology on the high school campus, otherwise, students must travel to other Greenville Tech campuses to take classes.
Dual Credit Benefits
Cost-Effectiveness: One of the biggest advantages to dual enrollment is the fact that it helps save money. Greenville County School District not only offers some dual enrollment courses, but they currently cover the costs, including fees and books. As a result, college becomes much more affordable. For some marginalized students, dual enrollment helps make college attendance possible.
Credits Transfer to State Schools: The credits high school students earn while taking dual credit courses usually transfer to the state's public universities. Additionally, some private colleges may also accept the credit. However, it is always important for the student to confirm this ahead of time.
Academic Confidence: Students begin to view themselves as college-capable and recognize that they can do well, which builds their confidence for future college courses.
More Choice in College: Since students begin accumulating their college credits in high school, they often enter college with a lot of the required courses completed. Consequently, this leaves more time for electives and double majors. It also helps students graduate early if they enter college with credits already earned.
Increased Likelihood to Continue Education: Students who enrolled in community college classes were more likely to continue their college education compared with those who did not participate in dual enrollment.
