Dear Parents,
¡Hola! My name is Wanda Gonzalez and it is a pleasure to welcome your child to my Spanish I and Spanish II class. This is my eighteenth year at Hillcrest High School. Before, I taught Spanish I, Spanish II, and Spanish II honors at Riverside High School. I have traveled and studied in Honduras, a Spanish-speaking country in Central America. I love everything about the Spanish language and culture. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm with my students.
Spanish is widely spoken and a practical language to know. Learning a foreign language can be fun, but it also takes serious effort. My expectations will be high. I expect students to be able to listen closely to directions, write down assignments, and keep an organized notebook. The following list of required materials will help your child to get off to a good start for a great year.
Materials:
Chromebook/ headphones:
1 ring binder : take notes
paper, pen/pencil
Spanish-English dictionary (optional)
Textbook ¡Auténtico! You will be accessing the materials virtually
I will follow the Hillcrest student handbook for tardy and discipline procedures. Students are to use the restroom before or after class but will have only 3 passes per semester. Students will either conduct themselves appropriately or accept the consequences of their misbehavior. My general classroom rules are to: 1) Be in your seat when the bell rings; 2) Be prepared, bring all materials every day to class; 3) Show respect to teacher, classmates, and yourself; 4) No talking when I’m talking; 5) No eating in class, and 6) Absolutely *no obscene or inappropriate* language or behavior.
The consequences for breaking any of the above rules will be as follows:
First time it’s a verbal warning
Second time, student, teacher conference.
Third time, student’s parents will be called.
Fourth time, the student gets a referral.
All work must be turned in on the due date (10 pts will be taken- off each day it's late). My students can receive privileges for good behavior. For example, the student can choose the next activity. More details about the content of the course will be on the course syllabus, but my procedure for obtaining grades is the following:
Major assignments 60% (tentative)
Minor assignments 40%
Grading Scale: A = 100 - 90 B= 89 - 80 C= 79 - 70 D= 69 -60 F=- 59 below
Exams are comprehensive and are given at the end of each semester. Students who miss homework assignments or tests will have to make them up once they return to class. If your child has any special needs or medical problems that I need to know about that will help them succeed in my class, please let me.
