Gifted and Talented Mission

The mission of gifted education is to maximize the potential of gifted and talented learners by providing programs and services which match their unique characteristics and needs.

We believe...

The gifted have a right to an appropriate education grounded in the responsive curriculum and a nurturing environment.

Our Vision...

The gifted and talented vision is to nurture students' individual gifts and abilities so they are inspired, supported, and prepared for their next opportunities in life, education and employment.

Technology Use in Challenge:

Per SC Regulation 43-220, South Carolina schools districts will provide [gifted and talented] programs that reflect curricular and instructional components to include opportunities for the critical consumption, use, and creation of information using available technologies (Gifted and Talented Best Practices Guidelines: Curriculum and Instruction, p.3, component E).

In compliance with GCS Board Policy IA and Administrative Rule IA, all students in GRADES 2–5 are issued a Chromebook for the school year. Device use is limited to required assessments and district-approved instructional applications accessed through ClassLink. Schools are expected to prioritize non-technology teaching and learning experiences whenever possible.  As Challenge is an accelerated learning program based upon national Gifted and Talented standards and best practices, students may additionally use their Chromebooks for research, collaboration, content creation, and other instructional activities as applicable. Challenge teachers are expected to balance technology use with direct instruction and interpersonal learning experiences.

New Testing Info

For the 2026-2027 school year, the CogAT assessment will still be offered in October with registration in September.  However, Greenville County Schools published a new testing calendar on July 2, and the MAP testing window was moved to August to allow students to be identified for GT services earlier in the school year.  MAP testing will now occur in August beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.

If your child is enrolled in a Greenville County School, you may still request re-evaluation via MAP with your school's GT teacher or test administrator. The MAP window will be open August 13-31.  MAP scores will be used as part of the GT identification process as well as for re-evaluation for the Charles Townes Center Program.
