Descriptions of the types of major assessments that will be used to monitor student progress
Assessments in the EL classroom
Individual portfolios with work samples will be shared with classroom teachers and parents throughout the year. Some examples of what these folders may contain are running records, anecdotal records, informal observations, checklists, vocabulary quizzes, lesson tests, reading comprehension tests, rubrics for writing, Lexia reports.
Students will also have a journal book that will be used as a writing assessment tool.
Major assessments such as WIDA ACCESS (Spring), PASS(May), and MAP(fall, winter, spring) scores will be used as benchmarks of progress and will be used to pinpoint what areas of improvement can be addressed in the EL classroom.
Running records, anecdotal records, informal observations, checklists, vocabulary quizzes, lesson tests, reading comprehension tests, rubrics for writing, journals, etc. will be used for ongoing formative assessments.
Students will not receive formal grades in the report cards from the EL teacher. The teacher will give class grades to guide students in their progress. The grades will be as follows:
(+ ) Excellent Progress
(✓) Satisfactory
(-) Needs improvement
The ESOL teacher will write an individual progress report for each student every 9 weeks and this report will be submitted to Mrs. Black. We will monitor the ESOL students who are failing or need more support.

Methods of communicating with parents and guardians throughout the year
Some of the methods used to communicate with parents and guardians throughout the year will be phone calls, notes, letters through mail or student folders, emails, information posted on the website, conferences, meetings (informal and formal), home visits, etc.
Parents are encouraged to attend meetings at school, to visit the resource office, to attend parent education workshops, to attend English classes, and to network with other parents and community members.
Parents receive many informative documents about the EL program throughout the year in Spanish. From WIDA ACCESS scores, EL notification services, information about the EL program, notifications for exiting the program, rights to waiver the EL program, copies of the modifications/accommodations given to the EL students in their classrooms, etc. Parents are encouraged to ask questions about the program and to visit the EL classroom. All communications follow the 24 hour rule response timeline.
My website contains general information about the EL program. It has the model of instruction pull out as well as information about the WIDA Consortium. There is information about entering and exiting the program and there are links to interesting websites that students can use at home. I am also going to send a letter to inform parents of the reading program that we will be using in the EL class and a login code they can use at home.
Notifications of parent meetings and family activities as well as invitations to special events are always sent home in Spanish. I have been translating many documents so the parents can be informed of all events at school.
I will attend my students’ parent conferences and IEP meetings.
I will send information home in Spanish along the school year to suggest strategies for parents to better help their children at home. We will meet throughout the year as necessary to discuss student’s progress. I am always available to the parents. Parental involvement and support is an essential component to ensure academic success at school.
Rules and Student Behavior
Rules in the EL classroom:
Clear and consistent expectations and routines provide a framework for responsible student behavior. We will follow the Cherrydale school wide 8 rules. In our classroom we summarized them in 4 rules:
Keep our hands and bodies to ourselves
Follow directions
Raise hands before speaking
Respect ourselves and others
