Cherrydale Mission Statement:

It is the mission of Cherrydale Elementary to have each and every student achieve his or her individual potential in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment.

ESOL Mission Statement

To give children from all over the world a new language and new opportunities for the future.

ESOL Purpose

The English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program is designed to provide equal educational opportunity and is recommended for students of limited English proficiency. The program offers instruction in English for speakers of other languages so that they will develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension in English. The ultimate goal of the program is to develop students who are fully functional in English and who are capable of achieving success in the regular English curriculum.

The staff of Cherrydale Elementary responds to all written or oral parent concerns, problems, recommendations, or commendations related to the Title I school program within 24 hours or by the next school day, whichever comes first. If needed or requested, school officials also inform parents or other interested parties of the issue’s disposition. All issues related to Title I compliance submitted by parents or other interested parties are filed with the principal and with the Federal Programs Office.

Available Services:

Students who qualify for the EL program receive services based on their English proficiency level and recommendations by their classroom teachers. In general, the following guidelines apply, although there may be differences for some students.

In our school, we offer

Beginner Level Students: Pull-out, small group classes for 30-45 minutes every day. Intermediate and Advanced Students:These students receive consultative services. EL staff members will assist these students with specific skills.

Parents will receive written notification of the services their child will receive.

Parents may waive services if desired. However, students with a waiver must still participate in the state EL testing in the spring. SC joins the WIDA Consortium. The test that will be administered is called WIDA ACCESS. All students Kdg-5th grades will be evaluated in the four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking to determine language proficiency level. To exit the program, a student must score a composite rating of 5 Proficient in all skills. Exited students will be monitored for 4 years.
